At least the Scottish Cup holders were heading for the League Championship.

Yes and a not so well known fact was that if Hibernians had beaten Heart of Mid-Lothian on 5th Dec 1896

They would have been Champions instead of their City neighbours.

Do all clubs have a resident historian?

Every senior SPL club except the Hobbits.

You need a history to warrant paying a historian - seemingly something to do with a lack of Scottish Cup wins.

Maybe an opportunity for a part-time historian at Fester Rd ??

That's brilliant!

In the near 300 (298 or 299 depending if the Victory Cup counts) competitive games between the 2 great rivals there have only been a handful that really really meant something as regards winning a trophy.

The 2 Cup Semi's and the 1896 Final. The LC QF in 2006.

In the league there is this game. Supporters of both sides could argue for other games where a point or 2 lost ultimately meant the Title was lost e.g. Hibs in 1950 and Hearts in 1965 or 1986. However there were so many games remaining that those Derbies were not as important as the games at the end of the season.

Apparently Sir Gay's great great grandfather spent the rest of the decade handing out pieces of parchment declaring that Hearts were about to go bust.
