Well Done Alex Salmond

Interview in today's Herald with George Peat who is moaning that the government will not give the SFA ?100m to spend.

http://www.theherald.co.uk/sport/headlines/display.var.2474373.0.Revolution_not_evolution.php

Yet another example of why the Herald is now miles ahead of the tabloid style Scotsman we actually have a journalist raising valid questions as to why George Peat wants to form yet another think tank when the SFA commissioned one from Ernie Walker decades ago and never implemented it.

If I was Alex Salmond I would be telling the SFA to modernise before the government gave them ANY cash.

while I share your sentiment about Peat not doing anything sooner, I do think he appears to want a major restructuing which is needed.

I like the idea of a pyramid system but I would remove the third division and increase the SPL to 16 teams with a 16 team SPL 2, with 3 team relegation promotion between the two. Like other countries there would be a north league and a south league or west and east underneath that and numerous leagues under that, with promotion and relegation between the leagues. This would mean that 6 teams would drop out of the main league but it gives them a chance to push upwards and means rather than a teams at the bottom of the 3rd division having no fear (except hurt pride) about finishing bottom, they actully fight.

I do think there needs to be a major restructuing and heavy investment in youth level. I also think its governments and councils who have to face the facts that they should be putting more money and investment into keeping grass fields and facilties. One of the most scandlous things to have happened to grassroots sports in the last 10 years is the constant selling off of sports land to developers so that councils can make a quick buck, I think it is disgraceful and I think people should be held to account, as the private eye shows, property developers usually sweet talk or know people in the council who will help get this through. The government may say no money until a concrete plan is shown but we do need money put in to improve so much. In fact I would say scrap the 2016 bid and use that money for improving football.

Give them the ?100m I say but only AFTER they've come up with the answers and put proposals forward.

If they get that sort of cash now there is a good chance that men who already have more money than they'll ever need will just get a few Jolly Boys outings and wined and dined for feck all.

Then they'll come back and say "we don't have the answer" cos the OF still want to play each other 4 times a season.

My initial agenda would be (in no particular order)

1. Reduction of squad sizes (F/T pros) to a max 22 (World Cup teams operate on this basis)

2. Wage Cap (football can't go on as it is)

3. Summer Football for kids and amateur teams

4. Ticket Prices (How much did Celtic and Man U fans pay last night to watch Villareal and Man U field reserve sides?)

5. League reconstruction (16 & 16 is about right ad I didn't need ?100m to see this)

6. Kick off times - should be at least 8 weeks notification of a change. I won't buy a ST again cos I can't make Sat @ 12.30pm or some Sunday games meaning I'd miss almost all cat A games. Am I alone in this?

7. Not wasting money on Euro2016 to the detriment of developing talent. By then our decent players will be over 30 and our team will be running about with their joy-pads/wii remotes.

There are many more things and if anyone wants to form a committee to discuss then I'm available (free lunches subject to govt funding).

good suggestions there, I would not have a problem with the SFA doing a major review but they must listen to the people who are experts, those who work at each level and also reasearch other countries methods. And if these reviews suggest (and they most probably will) huge changes than the SFA can not shirk away from them to do the easy option which I fear the SFA would do.

I would add a large restructuring of the youth system, so that emphasis is on from an early age of skills, using both feet, developing intelligent play etc. This can be done through teaching coaches better and as such as reducing number of competitive matches at younger ages so that they are given the chance to make mistakes and learn rather than punt and kick up to the huge guy. Also the facilities need to be massivly improved but that needs the government to do that. Possibly in large cities and towns, there is a facility with a number of pitches and a centralised changing facility with specialised coaching at each so that youth teams can play and train there.

If I remember rightly Ernie's think tank basically called for SFA modernisation and for it to be run professionally, not by committee's made up of folk who run the schoolboy's leagues (ie the blazers).

Think they spent about ?10m over a decade ago to come up with the proposals (a right few jollys abroad to see how it works in Brazil & Argentina etc etc) then the SFA asked a committee to vote on whether or not to implement it.

Needless to say the turkeys never voted for Christmas - how would a blazer cope without his half dozen all expenses paid freebies to football conferences every year??
