Exclusive: Gordon Strachan orders Celtic stars to stay out of Glasgow bars.. for fear of being stabbed

Dec 8 2008 By Keith Jackson

"GORDON STRACHAN has imposed a city centre booze ban on his Celtic squad because he fears one of them could end up getting STABBED.

Record Sport can exclusively reveal the sensational move made by the Parkhead boss as the festive season gets into full swing and following a string of high-profile flashpoints involving some of his top stars.

Strachan called a team meeting at his Lennoxtown HQ on Saturday to lay down a new hard-line disciplinary code that he insists has been put in place to protect his players.

After seeing Scott Brown and Aiden McGeady injured in nightclub brawls, Darren O'Dea arrested and right-hand man Neil Lennon hospitalised after he was attacked leaving a bar in the city's West End, Strachan believes it is only a matter of time before one of his group suffers an even more serious attack.

And that's why he has introduced the new rules.

Strachan's players have been told they are, as of now, banned from drinking alcohol at all on week nights. And they will be hit with whopping fines if they are spotted in any of Glasgow's city centre bars or nightclubs on weekends.

A top Celtics our ceconfirmed to us last night: "On the face of it, this looks like a punitive measure imposed on the players because there have been a few high-profile incidents over the last few months. But in fact the manager is attempting to protect the players from themselves as much as anything else.

"He is concerned that if things are allowed to continue like this, one of them is going to end up getting stabbed and he made this clear to the entire squad. Glasgow at that time of night is not a safe place for these high-profile young men and they can't continue to put themselves in dangerous situations.

"So from now on they will have to stick to the manager's code of conduct. Drinking through the week is now a breach of rules and the city centre is basically off limits at the weekend.

"If a player wants to go out for a meal and a few glasses of wine after a game on a Saturday then, of course, there is no problem.

"But they are not permitted to go to bars, pubs and clubs in Glasgow city centre - if they want to go out for a late night then do it somewhere else.

"Some of the players might not like it but Gordon is doing his best to keep them out of trouble. He has reached the conclusion the risk level is just too high and feels he needs to put something in place that sets an example for how football players should live their lives."

Before imposing the new orders Strachan gave his blessing to a boozy two-day Christmas bash for his players inManchester. Players headed south after the 1-0 win over Inverness Caley Thistle and were also given an extra day off ahead of yesterday's SPL clash with Hibs.

But, following talks with a fourman committee of first-team players, including captain Stephen McManus, the manager finally announced his booze curfew to the squad on Saturday. He made it clear anyone caught breaking the rules will be hit with hefty club fines."

Wonderful town Glasgow! :mw_rolleyes:

Colonel Kurtz
If Hearts imposed the same rule half of the George Streets bars would go bust!

If Hibs did most of the Broughton bars would go bust

I thought most of the bars up that part of town are in the 'pink triangle' and therefore gay ?

Oh hang on. Wait a minute...

Has Keith written a piece about the press being told by Celtic on Friday what questions they were allowed to ask??

Fair play to the one reporter who had the bottle to ask a question that Celtic had banned. The rest of the press pack should grow some and follow his lead.

Was briliant seeing Strachan go off on one all over the UK on Saturday afternoon. Thank you English BBC.

I think it was a request on what questions NOT to ask.

This is not unusual though........

Jim Mclean specifically asked John Barnes not to ask him about Alex Smith hence the reason he got so angry.

I cant believe that professional football players were allowed to go out drinking during the week anyway. I cant think of any other sport where it would be acceptable to drink in the week leading up to a game. Can you imagine Andy Murray going out for a few shandys 2 or 3 nights before a game with Nadal or Federer?

Last time I checked we had freedom of speech in Scotland so why would Celtic try to prevent a reporter from asking questions? More to the point why did the majority of the press pack go along with the request?

Looks like Murray isn't the only one who has their tame reporters on a short leash.

If hearts told reporters not to mention about the pay problems they would ask repeated questions.

Celtic should not expect to be privilaged in no questions being asked. Sadly though they do get it.

Possibly to save wasting everyones time as the questions were not going to be answered.

Of course he's not.
