Sherlock
I have a very old IBM Thinkpad that i'm intending to either give to charity or just bin. How does someone with no real tech knowledge go about wiping it of all personal data? Cheers

alwaysthereinspirit
Hiding your porn? Good man. I was thinking it. Any happily married man worth his salt should always know the basics.
Sexton Hardcastle
If you have the original windows cd/restore cd, slap it in. Boot from CD Delete the partion with windows on it (follow the on screen instructions) Install windows on that partition ...Back the basics. Boot from CD Delete the partion with windows on it (follow the on screen instructions) Install windows on that partition ...Back the basics. I don't have any of the original kit that came with it. I'd like it to be still useable if i'm going to give it to a charity but, as i used to use it for internet banking etc, i don't want any details of mine left on it. Is there an easy way to do this? Sexton Hardcastle
I think you can just format it from within the C drive. My Comp/Right Click C:/click Format Pretty sure that will wipe everything off and put it back to factory settings. But the next user will need to then buy a copy of windows i would guess. Sherlock
Cheers, i'll try the format it option. 10 times to make sure. Failing that, i'll go with Sparky's suggestion. Muchos gracias.
Sexton Hardcastle
If its going in the bin just take the HD out as said and knock seven shades out of it. Put a few nails in it as well. Whatever kinky **** you fancy i suppose.

Whatever kinky **** you fancy i suppose. I'd rather give someone less fortunate than myself the use of it but it is quite old and near useless. Batter it and bin it might be the best bet. jackal
re formatting it wont hide your data you have to overwrite the empty spaces you think you have on the disk. There are a few programs you can use but I have never needed to use one. Try and find a disk recovery program and use that when you think the drive is clean you may get a surprise. Your pc may end up somewhere in Africa and the HD will be ripped out and searched for info that can be used for fraud. Think it was on watchdog a while back.
