was it wise to hold this by-election today do you think? surely most of the electorate are shattered after an all night session of jigging around a burning wicker man, grinning like maniacs and all that jazz.

sorry any fifers, bygones.

The Nats will win.

Watch the panic in Labour ranks next week when Darling announces his "autumn statement" or whatever they call it now. He'll be unable to produce any sort of meaningful fiscal stimulus and will have to admit that the UK recession is going to be pretty deep.

Early indications are that the Scottish National Party have overturned a 10K plus Labour majority and are on their way to claiming another seat.

Yes We Can.

It is tight though.

BBC are reporting it looks like SNP have taken it. Even if its labour but close its still a dent in labours win with almost 75% of votes in 2005.

Oh and the fact prancer said Labour will take it easy usually means it will go the other way.

who cares burn it all down!!!!!!!!! hell hole of a place.

Kind of agree got very lost in Glenrothes few years ago. Reminded me of Dundee with all the bloody roundabouts. I reckon places with that many roundabouts is just a way to make people stay longer because they cant figure a way out.

What a tit that Willie Rennie is, he says that if the SNP win by a small margin then it wont be the political earthquake that Alex Salmond was promising. What he is failing to see is that if the SNP win by any margin then they will have turned around a deficit of over 10,000, is that not a "political earthquake" in itself?

As I said, what a tit.

I got a call from work earlier on today letting me know that I am not required to come in at 10 as previously arranged but now 2.30pm so I'll be wide eyed right through to the second that Peter Grant pumps a victorious fist.

Despite the bluster of Lord Wind of Salmond who arrogantly predicted a clear SNP majority it looks like Labour have retained the seat.Serves the Bassa right for becoming an East Fife supporter.

Its close. Labour have lost tonight whatever the outcome. They had a 10K plus majority. Thats been decimated.

Make no mistake, Labour have been hit hard today, the SNP will have won votes, Labour will have lost them.

Don't laugh too soon. Apparently, his name is sort of Scottish in origin. It's an Americanised mispronunciation of "Oi, ya bam ya". :mw_tease:

That's utter nonsense given the results of the Scottish Parliament election. If Labour pull a victory off here, it's suggesting that voters in the midst of this economic mess are running away from the SNP. I really hope that Labour have lost though.

Sounds like Salmond's in for a long overdue kicking. :)

Would you be happy if you had your house cut in half and one half given to one of your enemies, leaving you to live in half the space compared to before?

Or in Salmond's case, would you be happy if your house doubled in size?

So Labour will still have a 10K plus majority in the Glenrothes constituency after today? If so then I will concede I am talking garbage. But dont hold your breath on that one.

?!?

Dude - it's a by-election, still 18 months out from a general election, in the third term of a generally unpopular government, at a time of recession! Take a look at what happens in all elections mid-term, be they local elections or by-elections, especially if the government has been in for a long time, and even more if the economy looks like it's going down the tubes. So what if they've lost a few thousand votes? They'll get them back in May 2010, and look to have held on by two or three thousand in any case. That's remarkable.

It's a very encouraging sign for Brown and Labour: the first tangible evidence that they're on the way back. And it's a terrible result for the SNP: if they can't take such a seat in circumstances hugely beneficial to them, they have problems.

I think it's more complex than that.

Who is the sitting government here, the Labour westminster one or the SNP Edinburgh one? Devolution changes the dynamics of bye-elections and the interpretation of any protest vote. A defeat for the SNP will be disappointing for them but an increased share of vote, if achieved, hardly represents a big failure. However, this sort of Labour heartland seat is the type the SNP need to win if they want to push on.

I take your point but this by-election has been characterised as the test of the "Brown bounce". Coupled with Labour arguing (probably to good effect if they hold the seat) that small countries are hardest hit by this economic mess and that the Union protects Scotland (this is a myth but it's Labour's strategy) then the issues seem to be around testing Scotland's ability to stand alone.

Therefore, if the Nats can't win it after winning Central Fife in 2005 I think they are the real losers.

I must admit that if will be dissapointing if the SNP havent managed to win this seat, given their confidence before a ball was kicked so to speak. But the fact that people have come out and voted for the SNP in direct opposition has to be looked at as a positive.
