Where do Scotland have to finish

To Qualify. Trying to settle a bet.

Is second good enough? Or does that get us into a play off? Or is second possibly not going to be good enough to get us into a play off?

Anyone that knows how it works?

8 out of nine second placed teams go into a play off, with the 9th best missing out. In our group teams 2,3 and probably 4 will be evenly matched and hence miss out.

How can that be fair? Putting aside how well matched the teams competing for second are in our group we're already at a disadvantage by having less teams and thus less games and potential points.

In the other groups, the results against the bottom seeds are not taken into account.

the measure of who the best 8 from 9 runners-up are will be the games played against the top 5 teams in each group. games vs the bottom team will be discounted to even up the criteria of which runner-up has performed worst.

so there is no best team to finish second goes through when did they get rid of that rule

Don't know but we qualified for France 1998 on that very rule.

We're not always unlucky.

That's a euphemism, and no mistake! :(

Having just checked the tables, it isn't looking good, fellow Scots.

It seems qualifiying for the World Cup is an unlikely target for Scotland these days. Not impossible, but unlikely. There are just too many decent teams in Europe now for us to hope to qualify on a regular basis. The expansion of the Euros probably offers us our best hope of making it to a major tournament again. Sad times.

Hearts Heritage

From David Ross

I think now we are hoping for a Dutch victory over Norway and a draw between Iceland and Macedonia. That leaves the second spot wide open and offers Scotland the chance of redemption against Macedonia at home and Norway away.

Remember our last game is v the Netherlands at home. By then they could have qualified comfortably and facing a Dutch side with nothing to play for is a far better proposition than one which needs the points.

Fourteen points could well be enough for second and the path to that is winning the three remaining home matches and drawing in Norway. If we can do that - and this coming midweek's games go our way (two big IFs admittedly) then the only way we could be overhauled for second would be if either Macedonia or Norway were to win all their remaining games - including away in Holland.

we are in reality disadvantaged by our failure to score against macedonia and norway, hardly qualifying form is it.
