Great guitar solos

There are a shed load of Zeppelin ones, but for me the one that stands out is "Since I'v Been Loving You"

Some of the live stuff done by Hendrix is way out there. Always thought Hendrix was more suited to playing live than in the studio.

Since I've been loving you is probably the most note perfect solo over a complex chord progression ever. There is not one note out of place and the note choice is unbelievable. Mr Page knew his instrument alot more than alot of musicians at the time, and was well above thinking than his time. 'Ten years gone' and the use of the hindu scale - whats that all about?? Still so far ahead of so many people these days. Heartbreaker is still a fav though

Gilmour is a great guitarist and comfortably numb is unbelieveable, he picks his notes so easily.

Anyone that says oasis needs help

Mr SRV is top notch

Mr Kossoff can bend a string for fun

A special mention should go to Clapton palying with Robbie Robertson in the DVD 'The last Waltz' - great

That's a pretty much laughable example when compared to the likes of Mark Knopfler and Clapton as most of their material pretty much blows that pish out of the water without much effort at all.

The likes of Knopfler and Clapton are 'blown out of the water' by any Jazz guitarist. Joe Pass, Django and Montgomery makes these guys look like complete amateurs.

Totally different genres so it's a bit unfair lumping them in with those musicians. If you're going to compare Knopfler against the likes of Joe Pass, then I could easily trump your Joe Pass with my Carlos Montoya. After all, most of those Spanish guitarists are considered to be the best around when it comes down to raw talent.

Dire Straits and Oasis are a fair comparison as both consider themselves Rock bands.

Two good shouts there. A mate of mine was due to do a gig with Bernie Marsden the other week but had to pull out with a tooth abcess. He was well peed off as he reckons that BM is one of the finest blues guitarists he's come across.

On the basis that it's just about the greatest guitar solo ever, I'd say it should be.

Perhaps particularly great because of it's setting - I mean, all that schmaltz makes it stand out more than if it had been in an otherwise decent song.

I thank you kind sir.

I can now come out of the closet of loving that guiter solo :)

Always reminds me of going tattie picking as a kid. A Blacks of Corebridge bus used to pick us up and that song was always on, but wasnt fashionable to enjoy the guitar solo then:(

Almost scared to post this one in light of the classic stuff previously mentioned but the solo at the end of Goodbye to Love by the Carpenters does it for me.

IMHO aimless noodling, albeit at lightning speed, does not make for a great solo. They don't impress me.

Most of the ones that immediately spring to mind are already on here.

I must confess to enjoying 'Smooth' by Santana feat Rob Thomas though.

No need to hold back as I think most people can see past bad fashion, cheesy moves and appreciate different genres if the musician/s have any real talent. three that spring to mind are Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Chris Rea. Three fantastic guitarists that are often overlooked due to their commercial exploits.

Neal Schon of Journey in Don't stop Beleiving.

As an aside, I laughed out loud when I heard that at halftime on Saturday.

Ok bit of a ****** rock gimp but he can play a bit.

Satch is a legend. Most of his tunes sound like they were written for tampon commercials, but he firmly kicks the behind of all the shredders out there. Except Paul Gilbert.

Think that the guitar work in Young Man Blues (The Who - Live At The Isle Of Wight) is pretty awesome. Might not be the most technical or note perfect, but the passion and energy put into it makes it what it is.

Anyone who has seen Oasis live will know that Noel does not play the difficult guitar bits.

Anyone who has studied guitar knows that Oasis dont have any difficult guitar bits.

In the first 20 or songs you can do, you can guarantee that half a dozen of them are Oasis songs

Don't want to appear pedantic, but a couple of points:

No More Tears was Zakk, written after Randy died.

The solo on Nothing Else Matters was one of the few that Hetfield recorded (Hammett was not involved in recording this song).

Both great solos I agree.

Some more solos to consider:

Shadow - Beyond the drizzly nights - solo at 4:30

In Flames - Bullet Ride - solo at 2:40

The Living End - Prisoner of Society - solo at 2:16

Steve Vai -Tender Surrender - whole song and worth it for the faces he pulls during the solos!

Pantera - Cowboys from hell - solo at 2:28

Nightrage- Howls of the Wolves- all

And finally, Megadeth - Tornado of Souls. In fact all the solo work on that album is amazing!
