At least you're going at a more sensible time of year. I was there late June, and it was 116f when we arrived. And high 80's at midnight. I think it around a more modest 95f there just now.

We also stayed at the MGM. Beautiful hotel and we were glad we made that choice.

We were there for 5 days and just mainly visited the other hotels on the strip, as each hotel has its own attractions, such as the eiffel tower at The Paris, the Bellagio Fountains and the Gondola ride at The Venetian.

You should definitely go to the Stratosphere, for the rides at the top and also the view, which is at the opposite end of the strip from the MGM (best going at night). Also take a trip into Freemont Street, which is where the original Vegas casinos began (it is only a couple of dollars on the bus).

There is also other things you can do, like taking a helicopter ride along the strip at night or the Grand Canyon tours. It really depends on your budget, as it can work out quite expensive.

You should also take in one of the shows, depending on what you are looking for. We went to a show in the Monte Carlo hotel. It was an illusionist called Lance Burton and it was an excellent show, really worth the money. Again, depending on what you want to see, there are cheap ticket places along the strip, in fact there is one close to the MGM (beside the M&M shop), it might be worth while popping into one of them to try and get cheaper tickets, however, not all shows are included.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the advice! Not sure we'll be doing much other than poker but probably try and fit in something different one night!

I was there 2 years ago in July, 42C at night:eek:

Not too bad, everywhere is air-conditioned.

I was in the Excalibur, it was definitely the busiest at the time, we went around some of the other hotels, the Luxor is over the road from the MGM, it looks great from the inside. Incredible structure.

Enjoy.:)

I was there two weeks ago. The place was pretty quiet and the machines weren't paying very much. The old story no money in no money out. We stayed again at New York New York, we really quite like it. We get a deal first two nights free then $79.00 a night for any other nights we stay,we are also upgraded to a deluxe room with a view of the Strip. In addition we get Free Play money, generally $20.00a day. .

I enjoy the pub there Nine Fine Irishmen, the beer is good and the food is good also. Because of its closeness we spend quite a bit of time in MGM, we also take trips to Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay, they have that tram thingy so you don't have to walk between Casinos if you don't want to.

I never tire of watching the fountains at Bellagio, and walking through the Forum at Caesars. We took the bus, as said, two bucks to Fremont Street, I would not do it again, they say it is old Vegas, they should put the stress on the old. The Venetian is nice and Planet Hollywood and Paris Paris worth a visit.

I am totally biased about Vegas my wife and I drive down twice a year, and as soon as we get in the car to come home we start planning the next trip, its not too difficult because we do the same thing all the time.

Prostitution in Nevada is legal. You can get 'magazines' listing the local 'attractions'.

Choose Bird - Choose number - Open door - have fun.

What else is there to know...:)

PS - When i was there I was skint so couldn't afford it. :(

As I said we go there twice a year so we get a regular visitor rate, we also have the players cards you get and these accumulate points as you play. I get E mails from all the casinos pretty well offering deals but for us New York New York have been the best so far.

The most annoying thing in Vegas is being approached every ten yards by the guys offering pictures of the available girls. I get in enough problems with the machine slots, the last thing I need is to get caught playing the human slots.

But certain Counties dont allow it and I'm sure Clarke County where Vegas is, is one of them. Although it doesnt stop it obviously but I think you need to drive a fair bit out of Vegas to find a "legal" brothel

As I said I THINK, I dont know from experience

100% correct Tom but you can get a card from a wee Tevez look a like that will get you a dame to come and sit naked in your room for 150 bucks and the rest they say is between you and the young lady. Problem is that the bint on the card never resembles what turns up For instance I was there the other week and I never knew Paris Hiltons career had slumped so much she was hooking in Vegas.:)

As for shows I would recommend both Cher at Caesars and David Copperfield at the MGM I never thought I would enjoy either but both were 'awesome' as they tend to say. Going back in November to see Madge and Bette Midler oh and to see how Ms Hiltons new career is working out.

Yeah Tom, I think you're on the money there, it's illegal in Clarke County. We stopped (i.e. the bird and I) in a small place about an hour west called Pahrump in March for a night and I believe prostitution is legal there. I recall them making a bit of a deal about it being one of the closest legal places to Vegas.

I was in Vegas staying in the Luxor on Honeymoon and walking down the strip hand in hand with my new wife I still regularly got fliers for shows and other things thrustin my hand it was like walking down the royal mile during the fringe.

If I remember rightly Vegas outlaws prostitutions so some of these leaflets advertised "Room service strippers". There's no law against paying someone to turn up in your hotel and get naked and the county presumably isn't particularly interested in what happens next

It was a bit embarassing getting handed these adverts but we laughed about it.

When we got back to the Hotel room I found that a gigolo had put his business card under the door stating that "neglected wives" were his speciality. "Cheeky *******" I thought, "I've only had three days"

If you want a (centrally located) bargain on The Strip, I'd suggest checking out Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon (no, really). It's a small hotel by Vegas standards, without much in terms of entertainment, but the rooms are very nice (recently refurbished) and you can get really good prices. Because it's so central, there are plenty of places to go for entertainment and dining within just a few minutes walk (Bellagio, Paris, Caesar's Palace etc). Had a nice view of the 'Eiffel Tower' from my room when I stayed there last year.

If you like the Beatles, then I'd say that seeing Cirque de Soleil's 'Love' show at the Mirage is a must (best to book tickets in advance).

If you can tear yourself away, do the helicopter trip over the Grand Canyon.

Kalamazoo speaks sense - get some tickets and go and see "Love."

Theres a shop that sells half-price and even cheaper show tickets just up from the Hard Rock cafe, but I think its after 6 you have to go and check the plasma screens to find out whats available.

Hope that helps.

Sorry to be out of step with the general feeling on this thread but Vegas is a city I wouldn't go back to for any reason.

Stayed there for almost 3 weeks, 3 days would have been enough. Yeah it's cool for the first few days, but the novelty wears off seriously quickly. The pimps and coke dealers really start to annoy, the club / bar bouncers demanding to be bribed or you wait in a 2 hour queue for some ****-poor, ultra-expensive club where you can't sit down at a table unless use spend at least $200 on drinks, the dry / relentless heat and more annoying people than you can shake a stick at.

The place is a tip, probably my least favourite city i've been to in the states and I spent a year travelling around the country. It's sleazy (and not in a good way), outrageously expensive, full of a-holes, everyone is on the hussle, the clubbing / drinking scene is awful, it's too damn hot and it's filthy when you step off the strip or the old strip.

I agree in terms of spending more than a couple of days there Cosa. I went as I felt it was one of those "see it before you die" type places. When I was there last summer most of the Strip was a building site. And it is only really cheap if you aren't too fussy about what you eat. Damn good shopping though if you like good brands.

Oddly though I would go back but for no more than a couple of days.

We stayed in Circus Circus thinking it might be a bit of a laugh in a tacky ironic way. It isn't. It's like redneck Butlins, I saw people there that would be rejected from the Jerry Springer Show for being to inbred.

Your comments re the Jerry Springer show are so true.

The whole city is like that, it is a see it before you die sort of thing but it drove me mental after the novelty had worn off. The grand canyon and hoover dam trips were awesome which made the whole trip worthwhile. We got fee tickets for a Jerry Seinfeld stand up show which was brilliant as well.

I would rather go back to NYC or San Francisco and spend 2 weeks walking about, drinking, partying, checking out record shops etc

Real cities with real people and a tremendous way of life. SF and NY are both phenomenal, 2 of my favourite places on earth.

Much as I love Vegas I could not imagine spending more than the five days there we normally do. Vegas to me is a short term change from the mundanity of regular life. Its big its bright, and in a way somewhat surreal, but unless you spend a lot of time driving out of Vegas to see some of the other sites it is not in my opinion the place for a long term low stress restful vacation.

There are other options I have heard The Cat House, and in smalltown Wells Nevada there is another house for relief of stress and relaxation. I have been told about these places but because of my deep ethical and moral convictions would never consider trying them. Of course the fact I am with my wife and she is our family money disher outer this certainly helps me maintain my ethical and moral principles.

My lasting memory of being in Vegas (besides my Grand Canyon trip) was being handed free jazz/contact mags on every street corner. Oh and I just remembered I drunk a pint of Green lager at some weird Star Trek exhibition and spewed some time later. I should have just gone to Blackpool really!

How long have you spent here, Chip? I felt like that for my first two years here. It takes a while to fully understand it. I'm coming up for ten years now and it offers so much - You're so close to everything - I'm twenty minutes from the sea, 1 hour from the mountains. It's a brilliant place for wee kids to grow up, the standard of living is incredible, the food, arts, clubs, bands, creativity, melting pot of people, topography, weather, etc. etc. Yeah like anywhere else, there's **** bits but they're not part of my life. I love people coming out here now - they all think it's crap when they arrive, but spend time with people who know it well and leave with nothing but good thoughts.

I prefer San Fran but then I prefer Edinburgh to London but still love both.

Should of seen it eight years ago - just pimps, drugs and alcohol. Rapidly becoming the new Sunset. So much building, money etc. going in forcing out the souvenir tat and replacing it with first class restaurants, clubs shops etc.

All the old art deco hotels are getting a revamp and serious money pumped in as well. Another five years and it will be unrecognizable. Same story Downtown as well.

The original centre of the movie industry. All the wealth was concentrated there and the "suburbs" were places like Hancock Park. Loads of new buildings have gone up - Walt Disney concert hall, Staples etc. - and all the old status places like the Biltmore have been returned to former glory. Up until five years ago, Downtown didn't even have one of the big supermarket chains there.

I love the history of this place and still marvel that fifty years back, where I live off Ventura Boulevard didn't even exist as part of LA! It was desert and orange groves. All the old pictures are your typical frontier shots - gnarly old men with tremendous facial hair sitting on the steps of a run-down shop that sells everything - and it's the only shack for miles around!

Hmmmmm. I didn't actually do all that much when I was there tbh. Went to most of the main casinos and played a lot of poker and had a lot of drinks! Hopefully go back not too far in the future and see more of the sights.

Pussycat Dolls section at Caesars Palace was quality. You got all your roulette/blackjack tables dealt to by gorgeous women in skimpy outfits and pole dancers in the middle!

Went to Downtown Vegas which was pretty cool, where it all originally started.

Dreading reading kickback to catch up on whats gone on last few days, doesn't look a very happy place right now.

I made a bit of a loss but not too bad. I took 2k to spend and came back with 1750 in the end which was ok but I did expect to win when I left so bit disappointing in that respect. Whole trip was paid for by poker winnings so not a total bust! Got absolutely pish luck at poker when I was there. Will win next time.

For best value price wise and location you can't beat the Flamingo.

Best shopping around and booking direct with the hotel as they often offer the best price guaranteed.

Brilliant.

Whilst it would no doubt be a great place for a boys only break me and the missus love it.

We went as part of our honeymoon, and were told by friends and family it was good but you cant stay there for more than 3 or 4 nights.

What nonsense.

The hotels are great, the food is amazing. There is more to do than just gamble - my missus doesnt even like gambling that much.

Put it this way, I'd rather take a week by the pool during the day and nashing around magic hotels and great restaurants at night than lie beside a pool in Cyprus or whatever trying to hunt out semi-decent food if you can find it.
