Dave McPherson signed for Rangers shortly before he went to the World Cup.

I thought his first spell at Hearts was 87-92, thus encompassing Italia 90.

Correct. It was the 1992 European Championships he signed for Rangers just before.

A few reference books have him as a Hearts player at the finals.

A wee question. Which Hearts player was credited with a cap until recently but never won one? Clue he had the same surname as the player who won the cap.

Kenny Black?

It was Charlie Cox in 1948; still mistakenly given in most reference publications instead of Sammy Cox.

Just to confuse the question even more John Rafferty's book One Hundred Years of Scottish Football has it as J Cox Heart of Midlothian.

Indeed. I'm sure I remember Levein and MacPherson both playing together (and very well too) in one of the 1990 games? I tink it was the 1-0 win over Sweden.

They did play against Sweden it was 2-1 to Scotland with Johnston and McCall scoring. McPherson played in all 3 group games.
