BigC Posted August 27, 2008 Share Posted August 27, 2008 Therapist isn't completely correct. The gym closed but the Beauty Spa remained open because it was the only profitable part of the business. The rest of the health club is still intact and last I heard the owners were courting a chain that are big in England but haven't yet broken into the Scottish market, to take it over and reopen it. It'll be difficult for them to start again from scratch as most of the rivals will have swallowed up all the members. They'll need to invest a lot of money and be very patient to get a return in their investment. If you're looking for a gym, drop me a PM. KBers always get looked after at my place. I think it will seriously struggle to re-establish itself Big C, as you say. Most of those who were members will have relocated to other establishments, so realistically I would imagine they would be looking to possibly attract a new membership principally from the businesses operating on Edinburgh Park. I would assume many of those businesses are like my place of work, and have both a gym and other recreational facilities on site, further reducing the potential for membership take up, unless they make it very competitive price wise. Since then it has been rapidly downhill, hence the rapidly expanding midriff, and the only part of my body that gets regular exercise now is my upper left arm, which is used to propel the glass holding my drink from the table top to my mouth (with no specialist training required). Whoever takes it over will certainly have to make it competetive price wise. They need to seriously undercut David Lloyd who are their biggest rival. They also need to offer a much better service than they were providing before and target the corporate market. I know someone who joined there and being in the industry I asked her to pass on her experiences. She told me that she wasn't given a membership card when she joined. On her first three visits she told the receptionist that she had joined but wasn't given a card and they let her in without even asking her name. It wasn't until her fourth visit that the receptionist offered to assign her a card (which took about 6 seconds). Only one of the receptionist seemed to know what she was doing. The rest were by all accounts awful. On the advertising side of things, my mate worked at the Gyle for 4 years and hadn't heard of them until I asked if he'd heard anything about them closing down. I get the impression that not enough members of staff cared about the club and didn't have the attention to detail required to keep the club improving. I was even shown the letter that was sent out to members from the general manager, saying that the club was closing... and I spotted a couple of spelling mistakes. It's now not just a case of David Lloyd taking all their members. RBS has its own staff Leisure Centre, at Gogarburn -beautiful by the way. JamboJay Posted August 29, 2008 Share Posted August 29, 2008 I was a member there for 'bout 8 years ISTR. Good people, in general. The best pool in a health club in Edinburgh. Not the biggest, not the deepest just the best. Lying back in the corner of the jacuzzi, on a quiet Friday afternoon after a good workout, and the sun streaming in through the windows, you could have been in the Carribbean. I'm now a member of a club that's attached to a fee paying school in the north of the city, I'm fairly sure BigC nows where I am, and it's fine better than the Edge for some stuff and conversely the Edge was better for others, but that's life I suppose.
