It's time to restart the Raj and sort these loons out.

You did that stuff already.  That's why they're fighting.  ;)

They're fighting cuz we left them alone. The need the steady guiding hand of the British Empire to keep things at a gentle simmer.  Once we've got that lot under control, we'll come sort your mob out, especially if that rapey weirdo fighting man makes any political inroads :)

It was a tongue in cheek comment, of course. Having one nuclear power lobbing missiles at another nuclear power isn't an optimal situation though.

Two things you've made more of than anyone else on Earth.  One is national holidays, the other is internecine conflicts.  It's a legacy, of sorts.

The best outcome here is that both sides agree... you hurt me, I hurt you, enough is enough.

extremely worrying escalation and innocent people are dying

They’ve been randomly killing each other for years in some bizarre tit for tat scenario that seems to have stopped outright war. This escalation is worrying though as it’s not the usual bunch of blokes in a mountain pass somewhere firing gunshots at each other.

Thankfully, religion has nothing to do with this conflict, otherwise it would be a real mess.

If it escalates guaranteed it will be getting played out on the streets of some English towns.

It's crazy how many children hang around in military bases.

We should increase the aid budget to both. Those missiles ain’t cheap.

Came in to post the exact same thing. Also gives Labour MPs further chance to talk about Pakistani issues at the expense of British ones 😀

I attended the Attari-Wagah border ceremony as a guest of the General in the summer of 2010 (Pakistani side).

From the VIP section we had a fantastic view of proceedings.

Afterwards we retired to the residence for refreshments (non alcoholic), whence I was afforded the opportunity to stand directly over the International Boundary with one foot in Pakistan and one foot in India.

The military guys on both sides knew each other through their collaboration on the frequent crossing ceremonies and got on quite well.

The General was an impressive man. Six and a half foot, tightly bearded square jaw, military style moustache with the keen eyes of a predator, but softly spoken, inquisitive, and thoughtful. He was reassigned to the Swat Valley not long after as I recall, so who knows what became of him.

I trust that's when you reminded them of your passport and that things were better 'back then'. :)

A colleague of mine was similarly struck by an Afghan army general last year. Simultaneously the most intelligent and well-refined man in the room and the meanest, most capable of brutal deadly violence.

One of the security guys in Pakistan at the time was also one of those that had an aura about him. A rare specimen being a highly intelligent and calculating Scouser, he had been one of those SBS drifting around Sierra Leone assassinating West Side Boys in 2000. Only 5ft tall but around 6ft broad, he had a jaw you couldn't mark with a pick axe. He regaled that to that day, the only kicking he'd ever had was in a pub in Dundee when him and his squaddie mates upset some locals.

Why does every single conflict start with foreign politicians calling for immediate de-escalation? they’ve only just started teeing off ffs, they’re hardly going to go ‘actually, let’s forget all this and be friends’ on day two

They could play a game of T20 cricket to decide who gets to control what. Obviously a neutral venue required as India don't play in Pakistan and vice versa. No Pakistani ever played in IPL and no Indian ever played in PPL.

If we could just resolve all border disputes with a dance-off, that would be cool.

Maybe the Chinese will get involved. They have interests in Kashmir too.

I’m sure this could all be resolved if they get to see some western bobs and vagene. Chuck Bonnie Blue and Lily Phillips a few grand and send them over on a diplomatic mission.

That pair are forever simmering on the edge of a full scale war. Never comes to it and hopefully this will settle down after a week or so as well.
