FT: Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic

Among the blizzard of sorry stats, it appears Celtic are the first British team to concede five goals in the first half of a European match since Cwmbran Town against Progresul Bucharest in the 1997-98 Cup Winners' Cup.

Absolutely ****ing vile club. The irony of the whole pantomime is that Rangers by virtue of their Europa League endeavours almost singlehandedly prop up the Scottish football coefficient which enables Celtic to continue to squirrel Champions League money whilst they get ragdolled, thus pulling further away domestically but at the same time are routinely humiliated on that stage.

What we saw tonight is what we see too often from Celtic against the big teams in Europe.

They have no capacity, no fight to keep the score down. They do it occasionally. But this happens too often. They drew 2-2 against Atletico Madrid last season, then they get obliterated 6-0.

We over-praise, Brendan Rodgers over-praises his players for performances against teams in Scotland with minuscule budgets compared to theirs. The praise is way over the top.

Pat Bonnar in the Sportsound studio, too, I would imagine.

I particularly enjoyed when Tom English pointed out to him that the more pragmatic Rangers won 2-4 in Dortmund recently. Then reeled of 6/7 names that played in both games for the Germans.

Pat Bonner was raging desperately trying not to let English finish his sentence lmao.

Well done to him for that.

The lavish, unqualified praise from the media really brasses me off.

Liam McLeod is particularly bad.

Calling them a British club probably hurts more than the score tonight 😆

Fair point but for some odd reason they seem to revel in being the first British team to win a European trophy, oddball effwits.

I don’t think I have ever seen Celtic concede 8 goals in a game in my lifetime. I have seen them concede 7. I was really hoping for that eighth goal.

Greedy? Probably. Do I care? Not a jot.

Liam “that’s just what champions do” McLeod would have been an interesting commentary last night.
Heads should roll for anyone conceding 7, I’d suggest the BBC start by sacking Chief Cheerleader, Pat Bonner.

Oh dear, now you know what it feels like for the rest of Scottish football when they play you. But, as per usual, you will blame everyone else, as sure as snow disappears off a wall in spring.

Given that the only route into Europe next season for us looks like the Scottish cup , the co-efficient doesn’t matter a jot to me. Therefore seeing either arse cheek take an embarrasing hiding fills me with unparalleled joy

McLeod gies me the boak with his patter.

His "What has happened to Celtic..." commentary during the 2020 Covid Cup final was ludicrously bias.

All their fans from all the towns, cities and villages around Scotland who support Celtic as it was the easy option (and of course they win and are a catholic club) will blame all of the other clubs in their towns, villages and cities for being tin pot, for this hammering.

They'll just set it aside as some kind of freak result.  Onus put on how good the opponents are.  Even use the quality of the opposition as a reflection of how great Celtic are to be mixing it with.

At the rate they suffer Champions' League hammerings they soon will.

It was actually being said on Twitter. It's always good to point out Jock Stein didn't seem to have a problem in their glory years.

I wouldn't even mind them doing it if they would just put it into context of just how big the gulf is but no it's just lavish Celtic and it's probably this pre conceived nonsense that has them and fans believing they can take these teams on.Celtic and Rangers are good ( not amazing ) Europa League quality sides would be great if the rest of us could at least become good conference sides.

How are Celtic supposed to cope against teams with a much bigger budget? I feel sorry for them.......... Aye feckin right I do, they just don't see the irony of complaining when they do the same to every team in the league. Watch most of their games ( and Sevco's ) just hoping for a result like this. Unfortunately most foreign teams stop playing when they go ahead, last night was a blast.

Shouldn't even claim that.

First British team to win a European trophy were Glentoran - winners of the Vienna Cup in 1914.

If you can't take any and every opportunity to humiliate and ridicule your rivals then what is the point of being a football fan?

Me too.

I don't expect the pundits to mention the financial disparity all the time but the complete lack of objectivity is annoying.

Tom English is a lone voice.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's censured/temporarily taken off air for not toeing the Celtic party line.

Ewan Murray pointed out on twitter that Celtics recent annual spend was £105m, St Johnstone annual turnover was £5.1m.

Also, Dortmunds squad cost is 6.1x that of Celtic. Celics squad cost 185x that of St Johnstone.

The Glasgow media machine decides to ignore this of-course, as it diminishes how fantastically brilliant and extraordinary Celtics domestic record is...
