Anyway. I digress. RIP Brian. It's actually pronounced marshbanks, of course the spelling doesn't help with the pronunciation. Quote

Spot on. The media built us up to ridiculous heights and then kicked us in the baws when we were knocked out. As for Brian Marjoribanks, RIP. Quote

The Old Fifm game with hooliganism given a mention at the end. Nothing has changed and it’s ’aye Been’. Both clubs have always been Scotland’s embarrassment. The piece at the end, featuring ‘racing pigeons….🤣🤣🤣🫨 Quote

MacLeod himself did nothing to discourage the hysteria. In fact he fuelled it. There’s one interview in which he’s asked if Scotland can win the World Cup. His reply (and I’m no doubt paraphrasing here) is that while he’s not sure if we can win it, he expects us to come home with a medal (meaning winners, runners-up or third). For a country which, despite being blessed with outrageously good footballers at the time, had never even made a vague impression in international tournaments (and still hasn’t), that was some claim to make. leginten Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Not for me. MacLeod would only win out on the superficial elements of management - media-friendly personality, a certain swagger, optimism (in his case baseless). He left for Argentina with arguably the most talented squad that ever represented Scotland in a major tournament and presided over an absolute embarrassment of a travelling circus. Not all of it was directly his fault - the bumbling blazers at the SFA were knee-deep in it too - but he wasn’t up to the job. Clarke doubtless has his faults, but if you wanted someone to do the work and pay attention to details - minor things like actually having your opponents watched before the tournament, ensuring that someone had been to the hotel and training camp beforehand to verify that construction was more or less complete, having a tactical plan for when Peru turned out not to be as useless and decrepit as rumoured - then Clarke would be your man. In my opinion, the World Cup came a year after MacLeod's team had peaked. In 1977, Scotland beat England at Wembley and had a decent tour of South America. He wasn't helped by Ernie Walker not sanctioning a trip to Peru, to let MacLeod see them live, in action. Peru were badly underestimated for a nation with some World Cup pedigree, playing in their own continent. It was also Walker's idea to have the ridiculous, but lucrative to the SFA, send off at Hampden. Quote
