Hearts sign 10 players from the academy.

Would just personally like to say congratulations to Lyndon Tas on signing a two year deal with the club. All the best Lyndon and to the other Nine guys for the future.

One other player missing from those given contracts is Euan Glasgow, who has chosen to stay on at school for 5th Year. He was a regular with Scotland U16s last season.

It's good to have all those given contracts highlighted in this way, particularly with short profiles of each of them.

I was interested to read so many of them had been called up for Scotland. I had thought it was only Euan Glasgow, Taylor Hogarth and Josh Radcliffe. I assume the others are uncapped but have had training camps?

Lyndon played in a game v Switzerland, Callen v Australia and Gregor v Northern Ireland.  The others have been at training camps as you say.

I was wondering where he was, that makes sense. So he is still at Hearts but wont be pro till next season.

The one player this year, Gregor Burn who stayed at school last year who is a year older got a 1 year deal when the others are 2 years.

Fort Vallance

Great to see. Even if only 3 or 4 make it, it would be a bonus.

The only downside for me is that only one of the ten is a striker. Clearly strikers are in short supply even at that stage of development.

The tyranny of birth dates at work again! Gregor Burn’s birthday is on 21 November (2007) so he is actually only a few months older than many of the others.

Euan Glasgow was born on 18 March (2008) and to complete 5th year needs to stay on at school until he’s 17. If he’d been a few weeks older he would most likely have completed 5th year by now.

in fact for a young footballer who wants to get school qualifications, the ideal time to be born is January or February. This allows you to start school at four and a half, complete 12 years of education by sixteen and a half (in other words up to 5th year at secondary) and still be able to play two years of U-18 football as a full time pro.

Well done lads, and your families - it must take phenomenal dedication and maturity to achieve something like this. It says a lot about their young personalities and the loving support they have at home.
As an aside - this is the first time I’ve heard Andy Webster talk since he came into his new role with us - got to say he comes over really well in that little segment. Sounds like exactly the type of person we want looking after our youngest talent.

Any word if there will be more young first-teamers involved like Tait and Wilson or indeed even the odd senior first-teamer that need minutes?

Am I right in saying we are allowed 2 overage players in this cup? I'd be tempted to give Halkett 90 minutes. Opportunities for minutes for him should be taken whenever we can give him them.

Yes two over age players can play in this, as opposed to only one in the Lowland League.

Over age is defined as 20 or older as at 31 December 2023, so Pollock, Tait and Wilson are all under age.

I'd be surprised if we risk Tait this close to Saturday with the current midfield injuries.

This was my thoughts.  Feels unlikely.  Wilson and Pollock a different story, you feel they need every minute they can get.  Be interesting perhaps with a couple of the 1st teamers needing minutes - Halks, Penrice and Kingsley spring to mind.  Would it be a risk to try get one or two of them 60 mins under their belt, or worth the minutes?  It's a call to be made I suppose.

I think Halkett would benefit most and is the least likely to start on Saturday so would go with him.

Don't really expect any first team players to be involved though.

None of Tait, Pollock or Wilson have travelled up to Fraserburgh. Nair and Drysdale out with injuries while Rathie is suspended.

What a great goal by Hearts.

Mac Ross with the assist from McLuckie according to BBC. Any more details?

Jamie Mac seems to have made a few saves based on the stats

I see the big Aberdeen derby finished Banks 'O Dee 1-0 Aberdeen B. At least it gave the Dons practice of playing at Spain Park - maybe their big team will play there when Cormack gets round to improving the "Dungheap" that is Pittodrie

I’ve been getting pelters with this Jamie Mac situation and blocking pathway for young keeper. Hard to argue against

It's not really hard to argue against. MacFarlane and Stone are the future, they are on loan. The next goalies at the club are 16. If you play them in mens football before they are ready you could ruin them.

This way they get to work with an experienced goalie and will still get the odd opportunity but without us needing to rely upon them.

Very easy to argue - Two (Stone/McFarlane) out on loan with the next in line 16 (Tas) & 15 (nearly 16) it could ruin their development getting knocked about against adults. They can play U18 and be on the bench learning with the B Team.   Jamie Mac can also help organise the young defenders and talk them through games. What's not to like?

The best way of learning is playing games. That’s the whole point of the b team. Lowland league doesn’t matter at all. Would be great experience for them

What's a great experience about it if they are out their depth and their confidence gets shot?

It could also ruin the experience for the other boys as well if they are losing when they maybe wouldn't be.  The club know if the youngsters are ready, obviously they aren't considered to be yet. It's a big step up and they can still play u18s

Throwing keepers in at the deep end before they’re  ready could dent their confidence. I’d say Harry Stone’s development (at a rather older age) was set back by a year by going to Partick Thistle when he wasn’t ready for that level. The under 18 team is there for 16 year olds who have only just turned professional, with the prospect of promotion to the B team when the coaches reckon they’re ready - which may well happen as the season progresses.

Jamie Mac is in the 6th choice keeper position at the club so not really blocking anyone that's ready for the B team yet.

Loans for Stone and MacFarlane at a higher level are more beneficial for their development than a token effort in the Lowland.

Fraserburgh had a goal disallowed early doors for offside as they pressed right from the start against a shakey looking Hearts backline, they also hit the post and went close a number of other times during the half. Hearts had a chance when they got a FK 7 yards out for a passback with the whole Fraserburgh team on the goaline. First effort from Sandilands crashed off a post, ref ordered a re-take as the Fraserburgh players rushed out before the FK had been taken. Second effort was blocked.  Mak Ross got on the end of a Gillies pass to stroke home on the half hour to give us probably an undeserved lead at the break.

Second half Hearts were in more control but struggled to break down the well organised Fraserburgh defence, who continued to cause problems on the break.  MacDonald was having a less than impressive game and with 15 mins left he completely failed to deal with a deep cross the the back post to allow the Fraserburgh player to head home to equalise from what appeared to be a couple of yards.  Then a short back pass left MacDonald standed but the shot from a tight angle was cleared off the line by I think Smith.  Then MacDonald came rushing out to the edge of his area and collided with the Fraserburgh forward amid claims for a penalty but the FK went Hearts way surprisingly.

Onto penalties and Stevenson and Lister both missed (Stevenson a very weak effort which the keeper just flopped on and Lister sending his effort over the bar), MacDonald managed to block one but to no avail.  Fraserburgh were worthy winners, we were poor throughout.

Annoyingly I don't think we gave ourselves the best chance of winning this tie despite spending what must have been a significant 4 figure sum in sending the team up the day before.   Pollock, Tait and Wilson were all absent having played on Friday night against East Stirling. None of those three will start on Saturday and this was Tuesday, so why not give them more game time?  Rathie was missing again after coming off the bench on Friday and it showed, not convinced Lucas Smith is a centre half.

As for Jamie MacDonald, let's just say he's "rusty".   He wasn't convincing on Friday and was even worse last night. He cost the goal, and his decision making was poor throughout.   Hopefully he get's upto speed soon.

Not sure why you're making a thing out of a thing that's not a thing?  Cos the B team lost a game?  It's not only very easy to explain and understand why we brought JMac back, but also a very very shrewd move by the club.

Unless you think our 15 and 16 yearold prospects playing (above their agegroup remember) at u18s and spending full time training with a guy like Jamie is daft!?  And unless you think McFarlane and Stone playing every week at a much higher level than LL is daft?  All 4 of these young GKs are doing just what we'd want for their development at their age and stage.

Out of interest, who is giving you pelters?

Thanks for summary. Many of us are interested in keeping up to date with the youngsters.
