That's another weird one. Hearts are playing Musselburgh at 11-a-side.

The fives tournament is now between amateur teams at Fisherrow.

Seems a tad odd.

Incidentally, in terms of fixtures of changing....Brora Rangers were down to plays our 19s today according to a few papers and the SFA but it also got cancelled.

Penicuik Athletic Match Report

Penicuik 0 Hearts 5

Hearts u19s returned to Penicuik for the opening friendly of the season and almost scored in the opening minute when Bald parried a Copil shot onto the post and then tipped the follow up over the bar for a corner. Minutes later Hearts came close with another shot, this time by Wagner, but his effort went narrowly past the post. Penicuik recovered from the early pressure and held their own for the next fifteen minutes and came close with a volley by Barr that went just over the crossbar.

In the 22nd minute Bald was well positioned to save a header from a Copil free kick. Ten minutes later, the same player saw his shot curl narrowly past the upright. Hearts took the lead in the 35th minute when MULROONEY slotted home Copil?s curling cross to the back post. From the restart, Penicuik were awarded a free kick ten yards outside the penalty box. Gay struck the free kick well and Bjornsson was at full stretch to save low down to his right. Just before half time Gay fired off a powerful shot, but his strike flew high over the bar.

Half Time: Penicuik 0 Hearts 1

Four minutes into the second half, Bald was relieved to see a shot get past him but go narrowly past the post. Hearts had made changes to their line up and they were now dominating the game. Then a long range shot by Hearts curled past the junction of the upright and crossbar. In the 53rd minute, Milne was inches away from connecting with a Gay free kick. Three minutes later, Moonie got past his marker send a great cross into the middle of the penalty box, but there were no takers there for Penicuik.

Hearts doubled their lead in the 57th minute when the Penicuik defence was carved open and COPIL had the simplest of task to slot home from close range. From the restart, Hearts keeper Bjornsson raced out of goal to deny Gay. Then a lightning break by Hearts saw C THOMSON turn the Penicuik defence inside out and rifle home a shot into the bottom corner of the net. Three minutes later, Bald pulled off an excellent save to deflect the ball for a corner. However from the corner, BALATONI got in ahead of Bald to glance a header into the net. Penicuik were now under constant pressure and were finding it difficult to cope with the pace of the Hearts attack. In the 89th minute, C THOMSON scored the goal of the game with a scorcher of a shot from 25 yards that hit the back of the net before anyone in the Penicuik defence could move.

Sounds like Copil had a very good game. Let's hope the guy has a bit more focus now, especially with our new manager likely to show him favour if he gets his head down and works.

Actually being there and to be honest even though we won 5-0 no one looked special, it looked as if we had no stiker worth his salt, I wouldn't expect any of these to make the grade, sorry but thats how I saw it

IN this now annual fixture, Penicuik went down 5-0 to a young Hearts side brimming with exciting talent.

On show from the Tynecastle side were youngsters full of pace, guile far above their years, many of them who will be pressing hard for first-team opportunities as next season progresses.

Hearts coach Darren Murray used this game at Penicuik Park as a warm-up before heading for the Milk Cup in Ireland and he was delighted with his squad.

He said: "We got the ball down and that was important. We passed well, opened the game up and saw how they reacted when under pressure. It's a learning curve for us at this point. But it was a good workout."

Acting coach for Penicuik, Mark Cowan, was pleased with the way his players still tried to play good football.

"It was a good workout for us so early in our training. Fitness told in the end as it was grown men against youngsters full of running. I would have been disappointed if we had beaten them because everyone wants to see good footballers being given a chance, and there was plenty of talent out there. It was a good fitness exercise with the crowd enjoying the game."

The first half was tight with few chances before Hearts took the lead in the 38th minute.

Dumitru Copil, who produced some dazzling footwork, took the ball out wide right before crossing for Paul Mulrooney to scramble it into the net at the far post.

Into the second half and Hearts stepped up a gear.

In 55 minutes, Elias Wagner crossed low for Copil to side-foot home at the back post, then impressive full back Craig Thomson controlled the ball in the box and drilled home from ten yards.

Hearts brought on their subs and immediately stepped up another gear.

Penicuik were trying hard but fitness was now telling as the visitors grabbed another goal,

a simple Conrad Balatoni header from a corner. With time running out, Hearts scored their fifth of the afternoon. Again it was that man Thomson with a terrific strike from a short corner.

Penicuik Athletic: Bald, Munro, Steel, Trialist, Foster, Ryrie, Milne, Barr, Moonie, Gay, Gibb. Subs: Gallagher, Montgomery.

Hearts Under-19s: Bjornsson, C Thomson, Brown, Lithgow, Balatoni, Stewart, Wagner, Mulrooney, Cowan, Copil, Mackie. Subs: D Thomson, Love, McGowan, Robinson, Long, Deland, Hill, Ralzon.

Penicuik have an acting coach?

Seems the young lads played pretty well especially young Copil.

Hopefully understands that heeps his head down, works hard in the U19's and the reserves he will get his chance in the full squad. Think he should see Husband as an example as he only signed for us last year and did well in the U19's and the reserves and is now trainning with the full squad.

Copil did play quite well and showed some good skills however some things that let him down on saturday (& his team-mates) was 1) not always working hard enough to track back or follow runners - j.stewart & mulrooney having to do extra running to cover for him 2) trying to be over complicated & playing for himself too much instead of the team when simpler options were on....Darren Murray spoke to him a couple of times during the game about these things but otherwise it was a good performance by the kid playing in the role just behind the main striker although he got moved to left wing later in the game when Danny Thomson came on and did quite well there - also the team seemed better balanced when this happened.

Mr Cowan putting himself forward for Mixu's job there perhaps ;)

Well, I always though they were a bunch of p*** artists in Penicuik, so maybe that's got something to do with it!

(Only joking, no offence intended to any Penicuik-residing Kickbackers!) :whistling:

None taken you tart :movethatass:

Yes, it is a bit the worse for wear. They've been talking about a move for years, but things seem to have stalled on that for the time being...

As far as im aware its Arnistons last home game before they move their games to Olivebank, Musselburgh.
