Additional revenue streams

So with the completion of the Main Stand and the hotel, it got me thinking what other streams of revenue hearts could utilise. Is there anything stopping Hearts from looking beyond Tynecastle? Obviously a completely extreme example but for instance opening up a second hotel in Edinburgh somewhere? Just an example as something like this would obviously be a large investment. But what’s stopping hearts other than funds doing this or something else similar?
Everything also needs to be balanced with investment to the playing squad.

I think if there’s ever going to a be serious challenge then hearts need to find a way to close that financial gap in whatever way possible

Player sales and Increase size of stadium. Will need to see what is happening with training base first. But believe we are going to concentrate on player squad, for the next couple of seasons. Better sponsorship too.

People always moan about how lucrative student housing is.

Maybe we should have a nice couple of blocks of student flats somewhere in the city.  The Wheatfield, Gorgie, and Roseburn Student Accommodation.

Rooms furnished in Hearts colours, maybe with a TV in the communal area that only shows Hearts TV, and discounted rates on student season tickets.

3 blocks, 100 rooms in each, £300 per week (and that's cheap for Edinburgh) on standard 39 week contracts = £3,510,000 income during term time.  Punt them for £1000 a week over the Fringe and you're talking another £300,000 a week income.

I get to an extent your idea is a bit tongue in cheek but that the sort of thing that really could be looked at in the long term as a way to create revenue.

I know the training facility is next on the agenda, but thereafter if stadium expansion isn’t viable then we really should try to think outside the box

Don't think we have that sort of clout with council yet. Will cost a bit in brown envelopes.

I always wondered if it would be possible to buy up small patches of land and fit Astro pitches, can be rented out for sat/sun league teams to play matches on, training etc. fairly self sufficient, don’t require much upkeep, would pay for themselves and it’s providing pitches for the community to play on.

Increasing Tynecastle capacity again to make it the third biggest stadium in Scotland would be a massive move. Not sure what are options are or even if it’s a realistic one given we just increased it not so long ago however would be a massive step if we could start attracting crowds of 20/25k consistently which would hopefully see us pull away from the rest in terms of revenue.

Establishing the hotel will be made easier by having a large group of fans as potential customers, and making it profitable is helped by not having a loan or rental cost to service. A second hotel might work, but the impact of these might dilute the potential gains.

Agree that widening income streams should only be a good thing (as long as they are viable), and I'd imagine the board is looking at every angle.

Probably nothing other than funds stopping us doing it. Perhaps appetite.

Mr Rabbit

I’m not knocking your idea however I would like us to focus on the football team.

Whilst investing in other revenue streams will help in the long term I think we’ve done well recently with the stadium and hotel.

Especially with the season we’re having now is the time to try and move away from the others and push the football club on. Investment should be focused on the team and securing players like Shankland whilst improving the team we have.

A big marquee on that pitch behind the Wheatfield, fill it with beer, music and heaters. £4 a pint. Rolling

Not sure any clubs have made money from high Street shops or airport outlets. Good for PR and visibility mind you.

Big fan of introducing a Fan Zone. Somewhere to go for a couple of pints and some food before (/after?) the game - maybe with a bit of entertainment/live music or something like that. Couple of quid to get in or charge a membership fee or something, and then the club gets a cut of the vendors' takings or they pay to pitch up. Could have Hearts pop-ups as well selling strips, scarves and other wee bits and pieces. There's a fair bit of space underneath the Wheatfield where the shop and ticket offices used to be. Something like the Edinburgh Street Food thing at the Omni Centre but on a smaller scale maybe.

Naming rights to the stadium or individual stands too. We would always call it Tynecastle / Wheatfield / Gorgie / Roseburn / Main Stand so wouldn't be too bothered about what it said on the front.

Yep, a bar under the wheatfield seems a no brainer.
when we go to the game at Livingston their set up is top class. Large area under stand, hot food, bar, loads of space. Would be a winner if have thought for those especially in the wheatfield. Bar 1874 is too small and has hardly any seats or tables

I agree, like I said, anything needs to be balanced against the footballing budget

Has there been any further rumours on shirt sponsorship going forward? Think it was mentioned we will be looking at traditional sponsorship deals again.

we used to have shooed I’m sure at the gyle and st James from memory.  They shut down quickly as they weren’t money makers and especially in the eras they were open.  Our club shop is probably just fine

Princes St is a dive now. St James Quarter is where it's at and we've had a pop-up there a few times. Obviously doesn't make enough money to have a permanent location there though.

Agree the Airport would be a good place for a shop though. Rich Yanks would be all over that.

The cost of opening a hotel in Edinburgh is eye watering. Even not taking in the cost of the building you’re looking at millions to do the build and conversion.

We could look at some huge opportunities in the drug trade and then open up the following:-

Turkish barbers

American Candy shops

Taxi companies

Boxing gyms

Launderettes could be another and hide it all in plain sight.

Stick in a big casino inside tynecastle. Have it rigged for when the big celebs come and all profits towards the transfer budget

I think Hearts need more hospitality.

In a perfect world where inflation wasn't a concern and there was adequate physical room for redevelopment, I feel like all three of the older stands could be redeveloped. Safe standing in the Gorgie, better safety features around away support in Roseburn, improved amenities in Wheatfield .

I also feel like hospitality options, like closed suites and loge seating, in those stands would sell out very quickly. I'd prefer to stuff a maximum amount of seating in, but money makes the world go round. I think redeveloping hospitality seating near the pitch is a clear no go due to atmosphere making Tynecastle special, but suites and loge seating close to the top of redeveloped stands wouldn't be noticeable on TV nor would it make a major impact on atmosphere.

I think a Boxpark type set up behind the wheatfield would be brilliant. Could double up as conference space during the week etc.

yeah you need to get there for 12 for opening. It’s the one silver lining going there . It gets busy but they must rake it in there. £10 for quality food and a pint 👍

We'd need to build a stadium with a capacity of 52k to be the third biggest

Was out on Saturday with family who go to ER, they’re moving then to put ultras behind the goals, costing more too. The bar in that stand is going to cost £200 just to get in on top of the season ticket. They’ve also not mentioned my aunties birthday three years running, was great to hear the moans about too many hospitality suites, money making schemes whilst bringing in crap players and managers 😆
The point is there are plenty of examples of what to do and not to do.

We had a hearts shop within Burtons menswear’s at east end of Princess Street many years, also had the hearts shop at the old St James for years, windows were knocked in frequently.
