Narrowing the gap

The Goalscoring Knee

As a guide to how much better off we are this season, we're only (only!) 15 points off the top and 13 off second - after the corresponding number of fixtures last season, we were 37 and 28 behind. Headed in the right direction.

It's a real pity that we threw away so many silly points early in the season as we could be right in the mix for the championship. However the way that the club is now set up it must surely only be a matter of time until we do seriously challenge for the league.

And this is what a lot of us were talking about when we could see Neilson had taken us as far as he could. It wasn’t necessarily bridging the gap as in being level or better than 2nd, it was at least having less points between us at the end of the season. And we build on from there.

Neilson reached his zenith, Naismith is just starting out…

Said many times no matter how well we do we will never be allowed to get second or first. But getting the gap down is what we need to see. Getting third more often ( and hopefully one after the other ) means more cash and we can attract better players. No reason why we can't get within 5 to 10 points off second.

Qualifying for  European group stages next year will be harder, so with that in mind , we have to get closer to their heels and push them. We are getting more consistent and we are progressing greatly, on the pitch and off it.

We have to spend a bit of cash next season and think we are planning too. But again, no big over hall. Should only be a few out and a few in.

Not pissing on anyone’s cornflakes but, don’t forget the OF have been poor…………we’re in a great place though.

Splashing some cash is a must( without going overboard ) We should be looking at getting 3 or 4 better players every season going forward. The ones we have then dropping to the bench for cover and dumping those who now hardly play.

Recruitment is key, get that right and we should kick on and third becomes the norm.

There's definitely a bit of both here.

I said it during the good run that some of the hysterical claims of this team were wide of the mark, this last 8 days has shown it's a steady ship, but it needs added to in the summer to push on. The departures will be as important as the in coming.

If we can keep Beni, keep Shanks then add one or two. A settled squad going into next season on a high, there's no reason why we can't have some lofty ambitions.

Closing the gap is at least a possibility. Was listening to Tam Cowan (not that I normally take much notice of that gob-shite) but even he was saying that if Hearts can keep the team together, can remain injury and suspension free, then he thinks they possibly could mount a challenge.

Agree if we can somehow keep most of squad together add just a couple of quality players and we also have the emergence of Tait & hopefully Pollock things look good. We also now have a good tactically  aware manager in Naismith.

We are missing one midfielder that could change it all.

Coping with Thursday/Sundays needs to improve somehow. That is a tough nut for us to crack.  Perhaps if we keep repeating 3rd as a minimum, then we will get stronger financially for sure.

if we are doing that, unfortunately, Naismith will attract attention from down south

Our pre-season needs to be better, I think they (the coaching team) themselves would admit the planning/matches were all a bit shambolic last year.   I'd like to think that we have a couple of different plans in place based on group stages guaranteed or not, to enable us to hit the ground running. There won't be any League Cup games to get upto speed, so friendlies need to be in place (one of which I assume is the 150th match).
