Jersey Boys.

I didn't realise Frankie Valli was a right tearaway when he was kid and that he saved the life of one of the band members (who owed the Mafia a LOT of money) by agreeing to play in Vegas to pay the debts off.

And the music was good too.

There are only two musicals worthy of attention...

West Side Story and Jesus Christ Superstar

That's the best way.

At least you don't get folk on your back if you keep a low profile.

Went to my first ever musical the other week, to see Wicked in Edinburgh Playhouse and bloody enjoyed it.

Was thoroughly impressed.

Not much point rating it as the best though as it's the only one I've been to

Blood brothers is outstanding too . I think I saw Marti Webb in it but would loved to have seen Petula Clark

I was at one tonight funnily enough, Mrs. Doubtfire. Would definitely recommend but the best one I have been to was Mary Poppins.

N.B. Not sure if these are strictly "musicals" as such but they have plenty of singing in them.

I'm fairly sure it's safe to add Les Miserables to that list. Caught me by surprise how good it was.

Shows like Jersey Boys and We Will Rock You belong in a different category. Reverse engineering a set of well established songs into a story is not the same as starting with with a story and interspersing it with songs written to fit the story. However, in that other category, I'd give a thumbs up to (gulp) Someshite in Leith.

Saw Jersey Boys in Hull in May 22. Love the music anyway and the show was great. Did a bit of wiki searching afterwards and found out that Frankie Valli was still touring at the ripe old age of 88. Not only that but he was coming to the UK in June so got tickets to see him at Nottingham. Obviously not as mobile as he once was but still sounded great.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

School of Rock

Les Mis

Matilda

Cats

Sound of Music

Jesus Christ Superstar

Blood Brothers

probably others i've forgotten about right now.

Basically i love a musical but would rate Matilda and School of Rock highest simply because the whole family loved them.

But thought Wicked was dull and Rent was absolute gash.

I'm not fan of musicals but I'm keen to go to The Book of Mormon which is back in Edinburgh this year.

They are called “ juke box “ musicals . The theatre darlings frown on them but they are box office
