IIRC when it was set up non-family friendly language could be used (lightly moderated was the term you used) and had a gambling area where etokens could be used. My memories of it were like a primary classroom (in the days before classroom assistants) when the teacher stepped out for a few minutes and anarchy reigned. Though I miss it for the "members only" part, the night of the long knives must have been a nightmare for the mods and site management.
