Remakes you think are better than the original film?

The Coen Brothers remake of True Grit is better in my opinion. Though that might be that the original looks very dated when you see it now, in a way that not all old films do.

I will start with 3.10 to Yuma starring Christian Bale and Russell Crown.

That was great . However I’ve never seen the original so can’t compare .

The recent “ west side story “ was good and is almost better than the original . But I’ll still give the original the edge cause of Natalie wood and Rita Moreno

It’s almost impossible to remake a “ classic “ film. They are classics for a reason . However I know your question is just about a “ film “ classic or not .

The Judy “ a star is born “ is the best of the 4 versions . Babs 1976 remake is awful . Her worse film . However lady gaga version is better 😎

Does directors re-making their own films count?

Heat (1995) is a remake of L.A. Takedown (1989), both directed by Michael Mann.

Desperado (1995) is a remake/sequel hybrid of El Mariachi (1993), both directed by Robert Rodriguez.

28 Days Later (2002) is essentially just a re-make of Day of the Triffids but with zombies instead of alien flowers. They share some very similar plot points, especially the soldiers they find towards the end.

Talking of alien flowers, Little Shop of Horrors (1986) was an adaptation of the 1982 musical which was itself an adaptation of the original 1960 film.

Last Man Standing (1996) is a remake of A Fistful of Dollars (1964) which in turn was a remake of Yojimbo (1961).

The Fly (1986) is a remake of the 1958 original film.

The original is Glenn Ford and Van Helsing.

Made in 1957/8.

Robert Matheson's I Am Legend has had 3 adaptations.

The Last Man on Earth

The Omega Man

I Am Legend

The Omega Man is a classic and an infinitely better film than the first.  The Will Smith update is ok but doesn't have the atmospheric,  desolate vibe of TOM.  In it's favour it does get nearer in places to the plot of the book.

I’m hoping it’s Van Heflin or I missed a whole vampire side story.

I disagree with people saying Cape Fear. The original was menacing with great lead performances, the remake was cartoony to me.

I see that Ben Hur is an update on a 20s silent film,  Ben Hur : A Tale of the Christ.  So that has to rank as the greatest improvement imaginable.  Saw that on a best-of list.

This reminds me of The Magnificent Seven (Seven Samurai).  More of an adaptation than a remake of course.

My mistake Van Heflin is who I meant.

I would agree that both versions done some things better than the other. One cost 13m to make and the other about 90m to make only 2 years later. American version didn't bother showing you what she done to her dad though and the very last scene was rubbish and unnecessary.  I finished all 3 books before seeing any film. Just my opinion but the original was more how I imagined the 2 main characters . Fincher done a great job though and made a very good film. Not knocking him.

I know it's not strictly a remake as such, but Dredd (Urban) was a far better film and imagining of the character than Judge Dredd (Stallone).

Dredd was incredible. A farce it never got a second movie.
