Uruguay World Champions

Uruguay defeating Argentina sees them become the unofficial football world champions. Scotland still historically the most successful though.

I'd be curious to know the stats for a Scottish unofficial champion but probably far too much research involved.

Bielsa working his magic there now.

First time in 59 years beat Brazil and Argentina.

Helps all the clubs with their players too. Nunez at Liverpool for example. Valverde at Real Madrid.

Yep definitely. They could be a team to watch at US/Canada/Mexico 2026!

On a side note apparently it was the first time in history that Brazil lost back to back qualifiers.

That De Paul......

Goes down quicker than a $5 hooker.

He just got Joelinton, who had been on high park for less than 8 minutes, sent off!

Easy win for Argentina, far superior side currently and pretty much played within themselves and coasted it. Other than a couple of Martinelli efforts Brazil were dire and can't have been as mediocre a team as this in a hell of a long time. Apparently the first time they have ever been beaten at home in a World Cup qualifier. That's them lost to Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina within a month!

It needs dealt with.

It seems Every player rolls about after eveet foul now.

It's cheating and should start being treated as such.

Rung in Orange cards for a 15 minute sin bin for play acting.

It's a farce across every league Now, the introduction of VAR seems to have been a signal to managers and players to highlight every foul more in order to "win" fouls and get opposition players carded.

The women are far less prone to it.

Surely to **** Var can see what has gone on there though.

You would like to believe so. Maybe they had a South American Glasgow blink.

South America remains the best place to source players.

Still proper street football countries.

Watched the whole match and it was really really bad. Several players were down on numerous occasions for absolutely nothing. Actually felt for the ref a bit because it was so continuous and in the atmosphere they players were a disgrace for making it so unnecessarily difficult.

In theory I like the idea of an organ card per se but you just know it would lead to yet another layer of controversy and be implimented so inconsistently and haphazardly it would surely never work cohesively. We'd end up having Barrie McKay orange carded for nothing against Rantic in which time they would score twice! 🙄

Agreed but never in the past have so many played in the EPL from the 2 big South American nations. Just shows the power and maybe more so the wages. The Spanish and Italian Leagues just don't have the same draw as previously. Having said that there are more average players, particularly in that Brazil side, than there have been in the past too!

Sickener for Honduras in the Azteca last night as a 101st minute equaliser in the Copa America qualifier saw Mexico go on to win on penalties and make it to the tournament next summer.

Apparently huge controversy over the added time

Copa America 2024 is being held at the same time as the Euro's but will obviously feature night games, European time. A football fest next summer!  Argentina on all evidence look good things to retain it and win 3 major tourneys on the bounce!

Speaking as an emergency doctor: anyone rolling around is pretending.

People who are actually hurt don't move. Because moving hurts.

There is literally one kind of pain I see in my usual practice that makes people roll around like that, and unless there is an epidemic of kidney stones amongst football players, it ain't that. (They roll around because they are trying to find a position that relieves the pain, but there isn't one)

Yip,  or a sudden onslaught of Ear ache...

That's a dull one.

The pretending,  or cheating imis is ridiculous now.

It's actually embarrassing tbh.
