Bit sad how they are even trying to make the Race For An Extra Champions League Place To Incude 25% Of The League into something we should all be invested in.

Will there be a trophy?

Zero to hero for the Madrid keeper following his blunder in the first leg.

Glad to see them through, hate Man City.

Bellingham's interview after the game. First class, incredible he's still only 20.

Bellingham pretending to be unconscious when he was bumped was pathetic.

It’s be a real shame if Spurs (haven’t won the league since JFK was President) or Villa (haven’t won the league for 40 years) both missed out on the CHAMPIONS league ….

I get the need for the CL to showcase the strongest teams to preserve its elite status, but any country getting 5 places is just ****ing insane.

Imagine coming 4th/5th in your league and being entered into a 'Champions' League.

****ing nonsense.

He does have a whiney sullen persona on the pitch doesn't he - quite unlike his off pitch one.

If Atalanta win the Europa League and finish in 5th or 6th in Serie A (currently 6th) then there will be 6 Italian clubs in the Champions League next season.

Games gone etc !!

I sound like a right grumpy auld git but it's just a farce. Even the place in the CL for the Europa winner, I've not really got a problem with. At least if the scenario above occurs then Atalanta will at least be rewarded for winning something.

But if they do, it should be at the expense of the lowest team from the Italian league. If they need another team to make up the numbers, then promote a team from the qualifiers that may have actually won their ****ing league. EVEN if that is one of the OF 🤢

Exactly, remember watching him against Rangers before he moved to Chelsea and can’t say he looked all that good.

European competitions have gone exactly the way UEFA, TV and the big leagues wanted them to. In the Champions League era (1992-3 onwards), only Ajax and Porto from outside the big five leagues have made it to a final. And I’m guessing Netherlands and Portugal are sixth and seventh in the pecking order anyway. This century, only Porto have managed it. 51 out of the last 52 CL finalists have been from the big five. The small countries have been frozen out.

Contrast that with the pre-CL era, where there were European Cup winners from Romania, Yugoslavia, Scotland, Portugal and the Netherlands. Losing finalists from those countries as well as Sweden, Greece and Belgium.

Even in the Europa League, it’s very difficult for the smaller countries to compete. Since 2017, only Rangers have made it to a final. The Conference will go the same way.

Result wise.

Wonder what Mbappe will be thinking if PSG go on and win this now with his apparent move to Madrid already done.

Lille beating Villa 1-0 so tied on aggregate.
Would be unbelievable if none of the 5 English 1/4 finalists and overall 7 teams to enter Europe made it to a semi final.

English sides should be winning both the Europa comps - their budgets far exceed another teem in those tournaments.

Has the ref forgotten about Martinez’s first yellow - he showed him a yellow again during the pens?

Crazy scenes.    Martinez walking a fine line.    Referee bottled out of a sending off.

Apparently the rules say yellows don't carry on into penalties.   Just the 90+ and extra time.

That's why it's not a red.

Apparently a yellow during normal play does not carry over to a penalty shoot out.  Who knew?

Anyway, he saved Lille’s final penalty so Villa through

Martinez, although a quality keeper, is, imo, a piece of shit with a face you'd never tire of punching.

Villa through, undeservedly.

It seems that yellow cards earlier in the match are nullified during a penalty shoot-out

Martinez seems like an absolute w**k. Ref should’ve sent him off instead of bottling it. Then he saves the last penalty to put Villa through.

I’d be pretty pissed if I was the Lille manager.

The two yellows for Martinez will be a great quiz question in a few years.

Me neither. Certainly the commentators didn't know. They suggested that Douglas Luiz talked the ref into withdrawing the card and, ridiculously, that the ref showed the yellow card just as  warning that he'd show him a yellow card if he kept carrying on.

From the IFAB Laws of the Game

3. Penalties (penalty shoot-out)

Penalties (penalty shoot-out) are taken after the match has ended and unless otherwise stated, the relevant Laws of the Game apply. A player who has been sent off during the match is not permitted to take part; warnings and cautions issued to players and team officials during the match are not carried forward into penalties (penalty shoot-out).

Yeah I got wrong.   We all realise the rule now.

I like these scenarios of shithousery or edging the rules to their breaking point because you learn these rules ☺
