Japan will be a hard team to beat. Play good football, supremely fit, well organised and give 100% every game.

Unlucky to lose to Belgium last time and will be looking to improve on that here.

South Korea are similar the work rate is incredible.

You have to say Brazil's bench strength is pretty damn strong.

Jesus, Rodrygo, Martinelli, Fred and Antony would get in most teams at tournament.

They're reasonably strong at back, defenders who can actually defend, and could possibly have best keeper as well, should he ever be required.

They're just a better and stronger team than Argentina.

Would be a good final if they played France.

OK, can say the game was done but they look better without Neymar.

Think that's a bit harsh. He gets marked by a few defenders, doesn't hide and creates space for the others.

Serbia were knackered at the point. Partly from the effort to keep Neymar quiet.

Neymar is a fecking show pony.

Brazil actually looked a better team without him. More fluid certainly. Problem with having a ‘superstar’ in the team is your tempted to look for him all the time and if he’s not quite at it, you suffer a bit.

Of the current crop of golden boys, for me he’s the most overrated. Great player but comes with baggage. Not a team player, rarely looks up, decision making questionable.

Everyone looks good against a side who had to work at highest level physically for 70 minutes.

Imagine if Richarlison moved and was a good player, he'd grab a bucketful.

Still can't get regular game for Spurs though.

Looks like Neymar becoming team player as he isn't nearly as greedy as he used to be.

Richarlison does get his game but he’s had injury worries this season. Conte has fed him into the team gradually instead of firing a new signing straight in and expecting him to fit in right away. He’s taken Lucas Moura’s place in the first choice side.

My worry playing Brazil from kick off would be Raphinha and Vinicius.

Who didn't really get going first half.

I thought they were both well involved just didn't come off for them especially Raphinha

It's always going to be hard at Spurs with Kane and Son there as well.

Is it me or is VAR even featuring in the World Cup? Unreal refereeing. I’ve seen so many fouls etc that they’ve not checked but replays show them every time? FIFA crooked cants.

Pretty normal. Don't intervene unless clear and obvious error. Same in EPL.

This clear and obvious mistake is just a nonsense.

So the offside goal in Qatar was that deemed clear and obvious mistake. The pen that Canada should have got last night at end of first half deemed not an obvious mistake they can just make it up as they go along.

All VAR does is give the governing body some plausible deniability and a get-out clause;

"VAR never seen it, so we stand by the ref"

Did you hear them talking about how many refs they have working on it as well and that's in top of all the tech wizards they will have showing them every possible angle.VAR should work how it works in US sports with the ref in the sky who relays it back to the ref on the pitch and not the guy on the ground who decides.

Friday 25th November

Another day, another four group games. We’re already at the second round of group matches, so we know a bit more about what we’re dealing with.

Starting at 10:00 GMT with Bales v Iran in Group B

WFHG0D5.png Bales were outclassed by an energetic USA side in the majority of their first game, but managed to hang on and keep the score down to 1-0 until a tiring USA defence conceded a penalty in the 82nd minute. Bales remain very much a one man team.

FPKOYz0.png Iran got absolutely beasted by England in their first game. Turns out that trying to be ultra defensive against a very good attacking side doesn’t work all that well. But they did score twice.

Next up today at 13:00 GMT is Qatar against Senegal in Group A

6YZxjkK.png Qatar were absolute garbage in their opening match and became the only host nation in World Cup history to lose their opening game. Maybe the Saudi result against Argentina will spur them on? Surely they can’t be that bad again……??

LJMe8hP.png Senegal lost a tightly contested game against the Netherlands 2-0, but did carry a threat all the way through the game. Football at the highest levels comes down to fine margins, and the Dutch just had that little bit extra.

Today’s 16:00 GMT game sees The Netherlands face off against Ecuador in Group A

cv8nGDF.png The Netherlands had a little bit extra quality in them to come past a combative Senegal side 2-0 in their opening game and they’ll be looking for a 2nd win here today.

rUwHRot.png Ecuador beat an awful Qatar side 2-0 in their first game, but it’s hard to judge how good they really are due to the ineptitude of the opposition.

The final game of the day at 19:00 GMT features England and the USA in Group B

UGD6Lg1.png England absolutely destroyed Iran in the first game, running out 6-2 winners. Their media already have them as champions elect in waiting. But they did concede twice against a pretty awful opposition.

yOKjRT8.png USA started brightly against Bales in their game, and were made to rue not scoring more than one goal when they conceded a late equalising penalty.

Tite says he expects Neymar to be olay again 'in the World Cup'. The Brazil doctor says they need to wait 24 hours before assessing.

Neymar apparently was in tears on the bench after getting subbed.

Look forward to Iran/Wales match tomorrow to see Iranian players reaction to news from Iran tonight.

60 children (approx) killed by their government in crackdown on protests.

Now that's something to protest about.

Same as Harry Kane then aside from Kane played for over 30 minutes and Neymar was subbed immediately.

Southgate wasn’t all that convincing around Kane's injury today. I suspect they have some doubt about it still.

All offside decisions are deemed clear and obvious errors if VAR shows it is offside as there is no interpretation involved, unlike fouls. It is deemed to be objective fact. That is why linesmen are encouraged to keep their flags down, because the on field decision doesn't actually matter. Whereas with penalties for example, the referee is meant to give the decision they deem correct.

That is the same everywhere VAR is used.

A high profile footballer in Iran was arrested for having criticised the government (not about the current protests, but rather persecution of Kurds). It is being interpreted as partly being a warning to the world cup squad. Fair to say that the Iranian players are risking much more than a yellow card if they protest again,

Spain also impressed, although Costa Rica were mince and Spain have a lot of youngsters without previous WC experience.  They did however give Italy a hard game in the Euros SF and could easily have won, so I'll be interested in seeing how they progress.

Richarlison goal reminded me of Peles in Escape To Victory.

In saying that. I often thought DeVries headed last goal (#4 against hobos) would also go great with this music also. Anyone know how to put DeVries goal to the music from this film?

Was working from 3pm-11.15pm last night(working the same again tonight), just catching up on the highlights I recorded on STV.

1. Cracking second goal from Richarlison.

2. Malinga the Swinga can post whatever he wants, but that was never a penalty for Portugal. VAR officials should be ashamed of themselves for not telling the referee to change his mind.

3. Portugal got away with it right at the death. If the boy never slipped it was 3-3.

4. Still got the Swiss as my dark horses.

Natty Atkinson the only member of the Australia squad not to take part in the training session this morning, no word from the Australia camp as to why he missed it.

talking of Atkinson, apologies if already posted

There was absolutely no shame in Nathaniel Atkinson getting a bit of a runaround from Kylian Mbappe at the World Cup the other night.

After all, if one of the world’s top three players - which Mbappe surely is - plays at the top of his game, there’s no right back on the planet that can live with him. And the young Hearts defender stuck to his task brilliantly, didn’t let his head go down and did plenty of good things in the game as Australia went down fighting to the French.

I really liked Atkinson’s honesty when he spoke about the experience later. No hiding, no whining, just an acceptance that when a guy like Mbappe is on song there’s not much a mere mortal can do other than dance to his tune. As he said, there’s a reason why the PSG superstar is on $200m a year and he, Atkinson, is playing for H
