Will people change their ways after all this?

That may well come from companies rather than than employee's tbh.

My work for example, the lease on our current building which houses 1250 staff is up at the end of Oct 21, we were looking to either refurbish and extend the building by 20-30% or go for a new build on land we've bought nearby, costs are 25m for the refurb/extension or 60m for the new build. Now there could easily be a case for home working negating the need for our building completely and instead the majority work from home and use one of the companies other nearby sites for face to face meetings etc

I can see this happening. My Mrs works for a council in London and they recently moved into purpose built offices. It's all based on hotdesking as there's purposely not enough space for all the staff. Other than attend meetings there's nothing they can do in the office that they can't do at home. Even then, she can dial into any meeting she needs to.  I can see there being a big change in the business world on the meeting front. They've recently been forced to embrace video conferencing and many of them won't go back to making needless trips with the extra travel expenses unless they absolutely have to.

Aye, when O2 moved to their new HQ in Slough ten years ago, their seat to bum ratio was about 80%. Everybody hotdesked and you were expected to work from home from time to time (Not having to go to Slough, it was not a hard sell!).

Where I work now we could probably do something similar,  but I've heard people object to hotdesking  on hygiene grounds...who knows?

My project team is currently all working from home.

Engineering - 70% efficiency

Procurement - 50% efficiency

Construction - 95% efficiency (China)

Theres absolutely no way in this world we’re not getting hauled in as soon as restrictions are lifted.

Does the technology exist to allow us to do our jobs from home? yes.

Are people using it? Not really.

Large meetings (>4 people) are impossible as half the people are muted and not even listening, there’s no way to actually test people properly and it’s just a waste of time.

Very few people are actually doing their hours, it’s a combination of folks who are in a tricky situation (2x full time working parents with toddlers) to folk who are taking the piss (have an office at home, no distractions, log in for 4 hours a day).

Our management team are not strong enough in dictating mandatory working hours and that’s why the figures above exist.

I've used my free time and lack of usual distractions to really learn Dutch. Not sure how much use I'll get it out of it mind you.

Christ, that's what I do and we're doing more than normal if anything, as well as our normal day to day which hasn't stopped we're having to manage PPE stock and also source IT kit for home workers

I live in Maidenhead and (normally) go to a bookie in Sloff most days. It's a complete shithole.

Aye, I lived in Maidenhead back then. Windsor, Maidenhead, even Reading had their pros and cons, Slough was just grim!

I agree with you, sounds like the captain and I are in similar, if not the same industries, albeit probably on different sides of the fence. I am surprised at his experience of home-working so far. We are all working longer hours than usual, not that I am complaining, I am delighted just to still be earning for now and for the odd break on JKB during working hours :whistling:

If you’re on the other side you must be enjoying it. No client involvement and easy to hide from us. It’s infuriating on my side.

Plus our ability to pick up what’s going on by chatting to people is significantly disturbed by not being face to face.

Cant wait to get back to the office.

I used to hear this sort of thing so often, but in a different context.

Usually from the ‘yuppy’ types who liked to make out they were indispensable to their place of work.

The type who couldn’t wait to get back to work after a holiday, ate toast on the bus because they were soooo harassed in the mornings, and had shave foam behind their ears.

Not saying that about you btw, Mr Sausage.

I am in FEED at the moment but have spent most of the last 30 odd years in EPC, mainly on the PMC side. I am the total opposite mate, would love to stay away from the office as much as possible but most of our clients are Middle East and they all love coming over to UK with their families for extended stays so I suspect it will be a while before this becomes the norm.

We’re in execute so it’s all going swimmingly...

Nightmare as most vendors are using Force Majeur like sweeties and it’s impossible to affect the outcome.

Getting back to normality seems a long, long way away. But I was chatting to my colleague and he agrees that project management is nigh on impossible in the current climate.

I agree about the move to more home-working. It's inevitable that many organisations will look at the rents and commercial rates they are paying on big office buildings and realise how much they could save from having more people working from home. Ironically this could actually benefit the bar and restaurant sector long term as socialising will become more important than ever for those working at home.

I'll be fascinated to see how international air travel is affected in the long term. Again, the lockdown is bound to have a lot of businesses thinking about the necessity of spending money sending staff abroad instead of just video-conferencing. Long-haul air travel may also become more restricted long-term due to Coronavirus. In terms of holiday/leisure air travel though, I suspect people are just too used to easy international air travel for things to change greatly on that front. In fact when restrictions are eventually lifted I expect many people will be straight on the internet to book themselves a holiday in the sun.

Until I retired I was a project manager with around 20 delivery managers under my direct control. Of those around 25% "worked from home".  Most of them were a bunch of idle lying *******s who did the absolute minimum and not much more.  I reckon I got the job done with the goodwill of about 30% of my staff. I loved seeing the bitching emails they sent to HR at Christmas when they didn't get their precious bonuses while the good uns were smiling like Cheshire Cats.

I wouldn't trust anyone to work from home unless I knew the individual although I appreciate companies don't have much choice in the matter right now.

Yours

Ebeneezer Scrooge.

I've noticed it more over the last few days.

It's like people think they've done enough now and it's time to just go about their business again.

Its pretty disgusting.

You should see the state of the countryside about here. Folk cleaning out garages and sheds as theyve got nothing else to do just now then just dumping it anywhere.

'Its alright, someone will clean it up after me'.

These people wouldnt know what hit them in a proper disaster. Absolute arseholes.
