A pity, if so. One of the oldest, existing, football competitions in the world. Some great memories, too. Beating Hibs at ER in 1981/82, Crabbo's hattrick in 1989 and, despite nearly freezing to death, a 3-1 win at ER just before Christmas 2001. Hamilton took part in this year's competition. The SFA in their infinite wisdom do not publish results, or the table. Hearts didn't win any of their first six games in the league including a 3-0 defeat in the reverse fixture with Hibs. Hearts have improved a bit since the start of the season, but are very inconsistent. It will all depend on the team selection, e.g. will Connor Smith, Cammy Logan, Leeroy Makavora etc all play? Footballfirst
On clear cut chances Hearts winning by a two or three goal margin wouldn't have flattered them. Denholm's last minute miss epitomised the way the game had gone. He had done brilliantly to beat a couple of defenders on the edge of the box to leave him with just the keeper to beat. The keeper committed himself one way as Denholm tried to direct the ball into the other corner, but managed to roll it just past the post. Their keeper Murray Johnston (only 15) had good saves from Lawler, Smith, Logan and Denholm, while Ward and Makavora missed the target when well placed. The keeper was also alert in coming off his line and being brave. Connor Smith was excellent in the first half but faded a bit in the second. Denholm, Lawler and Logan also played well. Hamilton were in the Youth League last season, got quite far I think before losing to Basel IIRC. Rangers were our representative this year, knocked out recently to Atletico Madrid. Always amusing to see what clubs do well in these tournaments. Derby are doing great this season, yet not a club who are exactly famed for their youth academy. Tournament essentially split in 2 until the latter stages, with a group stage for all the youth teams of the 32 UCL clubs, played in the same groups with the same format, as well as a knockout tournament for the champions of other nations. I think certain countries like Scotland, only get 1 team in the tournament, so for example, if Celtic make it to the UCL groups, then the U18 Champions wouldn't get to play in it, although I could be wrong on that one. Pretty sure Hibs won it a few seasons ago and didn't get to play because of Celtic. They don't publish results due to the added pressure of public interest at that age group, but I still think the league placings would be good to see, albeit without results, goals for and against, etc.

The last time I saw them play, they were a bit too frantic at times with the press but, like the first team, they seem to have learned to be a bit more disciplined.
