Entire football season 'could be declared "null and void’’ - Coronavirus'

What’s better mate - 80% of the population getting it and therefore approximately 1.5m people dying or not pissing Leeds off?

You seem to have missed the point. They will play games behind closed doors or suspend games, but not a chance it will be “null and void.”

All sporting events should be cancelled until the worst of the virus is over. after all it's just a sporting event life is more important.

you are right.

it still kills 2-3% so it’s impact entirely depends on how many people get it

2-3% of the what is worst case scenario of 70-75% getting infected - so c.50m people in the uk - is a **** load of people dying over the next few months

Regular John

The infections seems to be accelerating in numbers in warmer climates, maybe we’ll need to wait a few more months for healthier death counts.

It's really not about most people though. So the old and frail or those with other illnesses that this reacts with badly don't matter ?

I think the point he is making is that the particular strain of flu has been sensationalised  on a level akin to the Black Death .

There's a circa 99% survival rate with most of the people that died having underlying health problems.

Theres no doubt much more people will die of flu this year in Britain than Coronavirus .

Not a nice situation until they find an antidote like normal flu or the temperature starts to rise and it's killed of naturally , but it's hard to argue that it's not been hyped up out of all proportion by the media .

The virus is transferring in China, SE Asia and the Middle East easily without any issues, I’m not sure what difference a few degrees warmer in the UK will do?

To be honest i think the virus is being ‘underestimated’ as much as it is ‘hyped’. COVID isn’t necessarily in its ‘end state’, yes in its current form it’s hardly the apocalypse but like any virus it can easily mutate unpredictably, if a virus as clearly infectious as this is were to mutate and start getting nastier it could easily get bad very quickly.

People die from common illness all the time. I think that the mortality rate for flu is probably higher.

It sucks, but the hysteria for this is way out of proportion relative to the severity of the condition.

0.05 % death rate for flu this is between 1-3.5 %

From what I’ve read, we don’t know how many have caught it, so the stats are a bit wonky. Some people have reported only mild symptoms so a lot of people will have had it without knowing, presuming it’s something less serious.

It's not as simple as that. Far more people have been infected by the flu and far more people have died from it. It's a serious pandemic, but people thought the same about SARS and swine flu previously.

The problem isn’t really the death rate, it’s how easy it is to transfer, how hard it is to stop and the % of people requiring hospital care..

look at the numbers, estimates suggest up to 80% of the UK population will be infected at some point, that’s circa 50 million people, estimates that between 9 and 14% will require hospital care.. for the sake of arguement means 4.5 to 7 million people requiring hospital care! We have <200,000 beds..

that’s why they are making a big deal of it, the system could be swamped.. these precautions are being put in place to slow the spread and lower the peak.  Nothing more..

I think people saying “it’s not as bad as the flu” need to think again.. it certainly isn’t an over reaction

I think it's also that they don't know a lot about it including how it transfers.

If this really came to fruition what's the stop some mad Manchester United fans picking the virus up in Surrey tonight and travelling around England coughing and touching hand rails?

Imagine telling the grand children how Liverpool almost won the Premier League due to some rank hygiene

It's actually not that easy to transfer and 1 infected person infects 2 or 3 more people. Decent hygiene and self-isolation will control a lot of the spread. The media are loving this because it gives them something to fill the 24-hour news vacuum.

Still, now we have panic buying here in Oz after the government pre-empted the WHO by declaring a "likely pandemic" last week, only because ScoMo had to show that he was in charge after fecking off to Hawaii when the bushfires broke out!

It’s pretty easy to catch because people are walking around for 2 weeks not knowing they have it.

i don’t think it’s right to file this under media drama .. definitely a concern..

And your first sentence shows why the real death rate might actually be lower than 1%.

Basically, it's a mutation of the common cold and the population has no natural immunity to it. As Martin said, most people impacted will have mild symptoms. People walking around wearing facemasks when they are healthy is quite funny.

That's the issue. And the inter connected nature of the world. It might surprise people how many people from nearly every nation in the world travel to and from Iran for example. An Iran that did nothing to stop it spread for weeks.

Do you honestly believe that circa 50 mill people will contract the disease and circa 5 mill people wil need hospital treatment  in the U.K. , i mean seriously?

Depends on how well things are prepared. I know the hospitals here in VIC have been planning since the original outbreak. The thing about hospitalisation as well is that there is little the hospitals can do except give IV fluids. The body itself has to fight it off.

And why the infection rate ( R0 ) might be higher than the 2-3 you stated.

It's still to early to know.

The point is people there are people walking around who appear healthy but are infectious, nowt funny about that, masks or not.

Just a lot more midweek games to catch up. Even 3 games a week.

Transfer windows might have to be suspended.

There's people walking around with all kinds of infections. The difference is that most people's bodies have immunity to them.

they still wouldn’t have the capacity to deal with the numbers. As well and IV and fluids they require oxygen..

Celebrities swanning about in ridiculous designer masks is as predictable as people getting the virus.

The problem with this strain of Corona Virus is this.

Unlike Influenza or the common cold there isn’t a vaccine to cure it.

Common colds and winter influenza have been around for years and although some fatalities happen (generally the elderly or unhealthy), we as a population and a world wide further more, are able to control

what outbreaks happen through drugs.

What causes problems is when a completely and as yet in treatable strain like Covid19 comes along.

Drugs take years to get through development. We take it for granted. Walk into a shop and buy some paracetamol?

Millions and years to get to market. It’s like a massive echo. Shout and then later you hear the reply.

Covid 19 is very dangerous not in its ability to kill (the %,s are low). It is new. It is very contagious and as yet untreatable.

The numbers and %’s of infected should NOT be taken lightly.

Like you say it's potential to kill is low , mainly people with underlying health problem , which is very similar to common flu .

Yes irs highly contagious but most people will show the same symptoms as common flu and will fight it off in the same way

nobody is denying that it's a worry and it has the potential to spread rapidly, but it's not the Black Death , it's essentially another form of flu which carries the same dangers to humans .

All the numbers so far back this up.

There is indeed a vaccine. It took a very short time to create it but it will take a much longer time to test it and manufacture it (imagine if they developed a vaccine that had consequences worse than the virus itself).

https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/18191077.scottish-scientist-race-develop-vaccine-deadly-coronavirus/

However, I conceded that you probably meant "no approved and tested vaccine" rather than "no vaccine".

Edit: I should also point out that vaccines don't "cure" a disease. They can however allow it to die out naturally by restricting its infection base.
