Underrated movies

I’ll start with ‘Storm of the Century’.

I’m not even sure if it can be classed as a movie or if it’s a two part mini series. All the same, it’s absolutely brilliant and typical of most Stephen King movies, it’s creepy as hell.
Colm Feore knocked it out the park as the antagonist. Andre Lenoge.

The Road to Perdition. Sam Mendes directed. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig even Jude Law all brilliant. Beautifully shot. An absolute classic

Fitzroy Pointon

Sharktopus

Edit: in all seriousness, Dog Day Afternoon. But that's just because it's my favourite film.

I am Legend.

Don't be silly.   The original adaptations of the book,   The Last Man on Earth & The Omega Man are classics.    I am legend was decent but not a patch on the older ones.

The Fallen staring Denzel Washington, a great movie .

Sorry to be a pedantic prick but "The "Fallen" is a terrible TV series.

Denzel Washingtons move is titled "Fallen" without the "The" in the title.

Hardly underrated... Most people agree its a modern classic 😂

👍

As seen in my eyes too.

I reckon the Jude Law version of Alfie was also underrated.

Still Life (2013) - a bit different

Probably not underrated, maybe more less-known

My favourite film. Bravo

In my opinion: Artificial Intelligence, Ides Of March, The Rum Diary (again nicely shot), Lucy, Inside Man (absolute masterpiece of a script), Looper, Dead Man's Shoes, This Is England, Borg V McEnroe (honestly, superb film), Most Violent Year, Bronson (improvised by Tom Hardy they say), Lawless, Assassination of Jessie James (a film ahead of its time with the camerawork and music, and Cassie Affleck is sublime in one of the toughest roles I've seen), Neds (love this film, really well made), Jimmy's Hall (a stunning watch, visually perfect)

Great thread

Yes I thought the main actor was faultless in that.

Another one on comedies - Three Lions

Did you mean Four Lions? If so I would agree. I very rarely laugh out loud watching films but I did watching Four Lions.

A film that anyone who sees it thinks is brilliant. Sadly it appears not a huge amount of people have seen it.

annushorribilis III

Hell or High Water,  it's been shown on C4 several times.

Clever story , good acting and great characters. The script/screen play (?)  got an Oscar nomination , I think.

Robbing the Mob.

Based on a true story of a young NY guy who finds out mobsters have social clubs where anyone can go , from any family. No1 rule : no guns, so he goes around robbing them at gunpoint. It's a clever story and it doesn't have a schmaltzy ending.

The one with Jude Law?

I had to turn that off. I thought it was absolutely terrible. 😀

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)

Should be a classic, but has only just about achieved cult status.

And from the same director The Fisher King.

Charming wee film with some amazing cinematography and imagery on show.

That's a great shout, one of the best child actor performances I've seen.

Excellent script, authentic and well rounded story.

Made 400m less than Elf.

Sigh!

2 films with Peter Falk. Maybe not so much underrated as just not seen by a lot of people. First one is Murder by Death, a spoof on fictional detectives from the likes of Agatha Christie and Dashiell Hammett (Falk plays a character called Sam Diamond). Tremendous film.

The other is The Cheap Detective, a spoof on Casablanca. Again, seriously funny.
