You sound about the same generation as me; growing up with admiration of the mighty USA combined with a wee bit of of envy by being stuck in the grim post-industrial 70s of Scotland. But as you correctly say, "nothing ever lasts for ever" and what we're witnessing now is the inevitable decline of empire (as have all empires gone before). For better or worse, the rise of the next empire will be south east Asia. It may well be the last empire on earth, given our collective, complete inability to sit quietly in a room and contemplate what our species is doing to our planet. I get your point, I'm obsessed with the Moon landings and space travel in general (currently readin Mike Collins' autobiography). The thing is, America has always been a deeply divided country. Whilst the Moon landings were taking place they were still going through the civil rights movement. The negative America that we're seeing now is the same America that was present back then. It's just that we don't have the highly publicised innovation to distract us from all of the bad stuff.

Has stayed with me ever since. I can roughly picture it, and it's highly persuasive stuff. It always leaves out the most important detail: That it is capitalists lobbying or straight up controlling apparatuses of the government doing this, not “the government.” It is oligarchy of the exact sort that Republicans create. Well rehearsed as his spiel to you may have been, it was intellectually lazy if it never even dug that deep, but then, if it weren't intellectually lazy, it wouldn't be ardent, super right-wing Republican thought.
