The Shawshank Redemption is the most rancid film cliche in existence.     Everyone and their dog seems to cite it in any 'best' or 'greatest' list.     It's a reasonable film.    An enjoyable film.     It is in no way,  shape or form great.

The only list it should ever top is that of most over-rated.

Over-rated!? Pretty sure it was panned by the critics and performed poorly at the box office.

There’s probably a reason why everyone cites it as the best.

Doctor: [Champ has just died] I'm sorry.

T.J.: [Georgie and Jackie start to cry, TJ is shocked] No! Champ! No! Champ. Is he out? Is he out? What's the matter, Champ? Champ, wake up! Wake up! Wake - wake up!

[kisses his head]

T.J.: Champ, wake up, Champ! Hey, don't sleep now. We got to go home. Got to go home, Champ.

[Georgie collapses into sobs]

T.J.: Georgie. Don't cry. Georgie.

[TJ goes to the doctor]

T.J.: Mister, help me. Wake him up! Wake him!

Doctor: We're all real sorry.

T.J.: Please, wake him up!

Doctor: Let's go outside.

T.J.: No, no! I don't want to! I don't want to!

[runs to Jackie]

T.J.: Jackie! Wake him up! Wake him!

Jackie: TJ, please.

T.J.: I want Champ!

Jackie: TJ...

T.J.: I want Champ!

Jackie: TJ. Please, TJ, listen to me. He's gone. He's gone, son. He's gone.

T.J.: [shakes his head and backs away from Jackie] No. No! He's not gone! He's not! He's not!

Jackie: [Annie comes in, a smile on her face until she sees Champ and Jackie trying to calm TJ] Please.

T.J.: He is not dead! He is not dead! I want Champ!

Jackie: Please, listen to me, son.

T.J.: I want Champ!

Jackie: TJ, please, listen to me!

T.J.: I want Champ! Champ! He is not gone!

Jackie: [he and the doctor try to drag TJ away from Champ] Come on, son. Come on. TJ.

Annie: TJ.

It isn't a bad film but it is immensely over-rated.     The archetypal film group-think of all time.

By the light

Slightly off topic but watched 3 Billiboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri on Friday night.

I still don’t know whether to be pissed off at the ending or not!

Brilliant acting from Bob Hoskins and a great ending. The Thing is a great shout too.

There Will Be Blood is another with a great ending. Full Metal Jacket too.

Just why maaan?

This kills me every time I see it. Even thinking about it makes me fill up.

It's like when I saw the trailer for the upcoming live action Dumbo remake. As I clicked on it I thought, "I'll be grand as long as they don't do Baby Mine in it".

The way it sets you up for a bad ending then just goes right ahead an nails it!

Planet of the Apes (original) - first time I saw it, just wow!

For A Few Dollars More - the pocket watch shoot out.  Indio is just about to shoot Mortimer when Clint starts the tune up again on the watch he's pickpocketed from Mortimer: "Now we begin." - I never get tired of watching that.

There is a Denzil Washington, Morgan Freeman film called Glory about the American Civil War.  Ending is unbelievable and if you get through it with dry eyes you are a better man than me.

Fight Club, perfect use of music and images.

I watched that for the first time on 11/09/2001. Saw a bunch of sky scrapers come down in a film then turned on the news and saw it happen for real. But of a head****.

It is one of the best of all time, imo obviously. I suppose I am biased as I am a huge Stephen King fan

If only they had held on 5 mins.

There are 2 different versions of this. Same as the butterfly effect

I’d like to add Amelie for the more sensitive souls among us (probably just me)

Amelie is a great movie.

I love the start, records made like pancakes, the suicidal goldfish, cloud animals and the daughter who wants to be close to her dad but everytime she is her heart beats so fast her dad think she has a heart condition.

The Usual Suspects obviously had one of the best endings in a movie.    Keyser Söze

The Prestige also has a fantastic ending and even gives a spoiler in the opening titles. :D

Some of you just seem to be listing good/great movies rather than a film that legitimately surprises right at the end.

The last third of that movie ruined it for me after such a strong start.

The Denzil Washington film “Man on Fire” had a great ending, you knew what was going to happen yet willed it not to.
