eighbours have signed a petition, saying they are worried it will lead to drunken and rowdy behaviour.

The council has agreed to sell the land to the regeneration agency, Parc, to construct the new building on the half-acre site. The first floor will be leased to Craigmillar Hearts Supporters Club for 15 years. They will still have to seek approval for a detailed planning application.

But the move has angered tenants of the nearby Hunters Hall Housing Co-operative, who say that it is an unsuitable site for the club as it is next-door to a care home for the elderly. They say the area already has a problem with anti-social behaviour, and the club will encourage more drinking in the area.

James Cameron, the co-op's vice-chairman, said they were not opposed to the idea, but the site was inappropriate. He said: "We have handed in a very full case to the council explaining our many reasons for our opposition to the plan and we look forward to the planning decision. A lot of people were very unhappy with the location. There are already problems with antisocial behaviour,:hobofish: and another licensed premises will make it worse."

Local shopkeepers have also said that the club could lead to more problems with drinking in the area.

Craigmillar Community Council has also said they would like to see the club replaced, but at a different location.:P

The club can trace its heritage back to 1947:), but its 300 members have been left homeless since the fire at their base on Harewood Road in 2005. The old site has now been converted to a caravan site, and members have had to travel to the Danderhall miners' club to meet. Club secretary Ronnie Arthur said: "We've been without a home for so long now. We just want to get established."

Parc intends to build a mixed development, with the ground floor used for shops and offices. There would also be houses or flats on the rest of the site. The council will contribute around ?640,000, which it received in insurance money following the fire, to the cost of the new building, with the club already agreeing to lease it at ?12,900 a year for 15 years.

Dave Anderson, the council's director of city development, recommended approving the land sale at a meeting this week. He said they had regularly consulted local residents and club members.

Agree totally Meadows. Ronnie Arthur, Dode and the other club members have worked their feckin asses off not just to succeed with this but to keep Craigmillar Hearts SC going in the interim.

For anyone that is interested the club are having a fundraising day, this was predominantly aimed at other member clubs of the FHSC, but I am sure Craigmillar Hearts SC would appreciate support from all Hearts fans -

Craigmillar Hearts have experienced great difficulties over the last few years with planning permission for new premises.

Club Secretary Ronnie Arthur has recently spoken to architects and they have explained in detail the reasons the planning application has again been delayed.

Like most clubs, Craigmillar Hearts suffered an horrendous season last season, latterly only running a sixteen seater coach and a couple of cars to away fixtures.

As a result, club funds are very low and need replenished before the start of the new season. In order to assist with this, the club have organised a fund raising day in the Danderhall Miners Club on Sunday 27th July (tickets priced ? 6.00 and includes cabaret) and the club are appealing to all member clubs to support this event and help keep Craigmillar Hearts afloat until there is further progress on the new club.

If anyone is interested I can give a contact number for Ronnie Arthur if you don't already have contact details.

I'ma Northfield boy who usually avoided Craigmillar like the plague, however if they have a paypal account I'd be happy to donate a few quid to such a good cause - for obvious reasons couldn't make the charity do
