Sometimes you still recall random sporting stars from your youth, not because they were brilliant but for some other reason. In this case for me it was the name that stood out!

Brian Jacks. Think his sport was judo but I only saw him on Superstars and he was amazing

My first thought, too.

I think he was particularly good at the squat thrusts (I think they were called).

Stuart Lyon

F*nny Blankers Koen  - Dutch track and field athlete who raced in Edinburgh which led to the Evening News headline of "Flying F*nny thrills crowd at Murrayfield".

Aye, his way of doing squats was different and others quickly followed. Rather than lifting his while lower body back and forward, it was more a slide motion. For those who saw it, they will know what I am trying to say.

I had to Google Blankers Koen to find out their first name :robbo:

Forget his name but there was a show jumper in the '70's who was very famous for a while. No nonsense Northener who gave the high-heid-yins of his sport the two fingers while on horseback.

That's the man.

He was always at odds with the posh punters of show jumping, iirc.

Probably most famous for his serve. It's pretty much the norm for players to build their game on a powerful serve nowadays but he did it years before it was commonplace.

Good player generally though. He was one of Borg's 5-in-a-row Wimbledon victims. 1979, iirc.

I P Knightley

I'd forgotten about Suzanne Dando, on who I had a wee crush before that link up with Charlie Nicholas.

Howzabout Fuzzy Zoeller? I only recently learnt why he got the nickname, "Fuzzy". First names with Frank Urban which, with the American way to mispronounce the letter Z, gives you the F. U. Zee.

Hale Irwin another that springs to mind.  Seem to recall he was one of the first to play with flurescent balls, yellow iirc.

Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe

Steve Cram, when he came along as the young pretender, was good, but not in their class.

Former Nottingham Forrest player, Johnny Metgod. Mainly because he happened to be that ******* player you always ended up getting a doubler of when you were trying to fill your sticker album. Must have had at least 20 Johnny Metgods at one point.
