coppercrutch
Can't we just round these people up, send them off to India, and let them know what life is really about ? A quote from the BBC... "The union is calling for a minimum wage of ?36,000 a year" I Seriously hate these people. 36k MINIMUM for driving an effing truck. These people should be made redundant and forced to work in the fields picking fruit. That would show them what REAL work was. They are the perfect example of why this country is going down the tubes. Laziness and greed. Endemic in our once proud nation. It is disgusting. Have you seen any of these drivers 'representatives' on the TV ? Not exactly the sharpest tools in the box. And yet they think they DESERVE a pay increase... Apparently, according to their union, they have not had a pay increase since 1992. Funny I didn't hear them moaning back then about getting OVERPAID for the menial job they were doing................ i8hibsh
Just like in the 70's (pre thatcher) the Trade Unions are running the country. Someone needs to stand up to them. This is not about if the driver's work hard as I am sure we all agree on the fact they do. but here is the thing, most of us work hard and let's be honest most of us are underpaid. We simply can't just down tools at the expense of the economy. When they became truck drievrs they knew what the pay rate etc was. It isn't the hardest job (albeit it's important) im sure. Feck them - they are asking for almost 50% increases if the figures in the OP are to be believed. It is time for the UK and it's gov't to stop being slaves to these unreasonable greedy selfish ******* that are the Unions.

deesidejambo
These drivers do not work for Shell. They work for a haulage firm that happens to have the contract to deliver Shell fuel. They are unfairly using the Shell card to try and get more money. Sack them all. Also - what happened to the Grangemouth pension dispute? The strikers said it was to protect future employees from going onto a different pension scheme but I think the real reason wa because they were going to be asked to contribute to their own final salary scheme which is currently non-contributory. Anyone know what the final deal is?

frankblack
Bring back Mrs T, she would sort them out. Agree entirely and with a similar post above. We need the government to clamp down hard on the unions. Labour are going to lose the next election and the failure to stand up to the unions is going to be a large part in their downfall (that and the economy). The thicko union types that are in favour of repeated strike action don't seem to understand that this is what kept the Tories in power for so long, so ultimately they are just undermining themselves. The clock is ticking down on Labour getting booted out at the next election.

Debtor
To be fair the Tories are nly out for themselves, they care nothing for the workers. However this strike appears to be just greed. A company that makes huge profits and gives it's high ups huge bonus's cannot complain about the drivers. I realise they have been sold off, and you can see why, but Shell have brought this on themselves. The drivers must stop work after five hours according to the law (if I remember right). The tanker can only deliver to a few petrol stations, and therefore they cannot work a full 45 hours a week. Unless they do overtime legally. If they get a mere ?30,000 for that I am really sorry for their suffering. To ask for a 13% increase while soldiers start at ?17,000 is a bit much, especially when 5 Para's have died this week. This is not a strike with a foundation, it is just greed. Unions that protect their members are very good and worth having. This lot (unfortunately fronted by a scouser this morning, how unusual!) are just greedy.

They are unfairly using the Shell card to try and get more money. Sack them all. Correct most work for Hoyer. The Trade Union view (I've spent all day with a Unite SS) is that Hoyer should simply insist that Shell pay them more for their service. Unfortunately the TU are not living in the real world. We all know Shell are raking it in, as are all the Supermarkets, but they have Logistics Companies by the balls. If Hoyer ask Shell for more cash, they'll simply go elsewhere. Tanker drivers are the most highly paid LGV drivers going, although the job is clearly more risky than your average driving job. I doubt there's one of them earning less than ?40k a year. blairdin
Even if Rosyth goes in September, there is still no shortgage of ferry links between the mainland Europe and the UK (Hull, North Shields, Aberdeen via Lerwick). It might also start to look attractive for Repulic of Ireland Ireland hauliers (Troon, Stranraer, Fleetwood, Holyhead). Between the extortionate cost of fuel in the UK and what seem to be completely unrealistic wage demands of drivers, it surely can't be long until hauliers based in elsewhere in Europe can tender for this work safe in the knowledge they're undercutting our firms. They send a fully fuelled truck over by ferry driven by a driver happy to earn ?22k a year, truck goes to Grangemouth (or A N other refinery), distributes our fuel, returns on ferry. Let's face it, the oil companies wouldn't worry about the precious Brittish drivers - they're motivated by ???s.
