Aye, I get that we have an active planet that replenishes the earth, but when was the last time we had a large crater occur?

Like basically never in human life?

And the comments about small meteors not getting through our atmosphere is nonsense.

Decent!

The moon is riddled with them though, absolutely riddled, I just find it strange that Earth only get's the occasional one every 50'000 years or so.

I think we're lazer beaming them.

Somewhat like saying you must be way older than your parents. Also look up late heavy bombardment.

Funny thing about it is until a mining engineer called Daniel Barringer came along and looked at it in the early 20th century it was presumed to be volcanic in origin. People back then didn't think of impacts as something that still happened. Or even at all much, anywhere, even on the moon. Quote from the wiki page.

Barringer's arguments were met with skepticism. At the time, the craters visible on the Moon were thought to be volcanic, and no impact craters were known.

I think that mentality carried on to to some degree till we actually witnessed comet shoemaker-levy strike Jupiter. That got their attention, this shit is real and it happens. That's when they started planet watch.

The moon was formed from a huge collision with the Earth. We know this because we brought moon rocks back from the moon and examined them.

Kalamazoo Jambo

Moon currently taking a decent chunk out of the sun here in sunny Dayton, Ohio. Just under an hour to totality. A couple of clouds lurking but hopefully nothing to disrupt the main event.
