Tony Watt's socks

I've noticed that the back of his socks always look like they are full of holes. What's that about? It is both socks so obviously isn't the result of being raked down the back of the legs.

Or is it just my rubbish eyesight letting me down?

The Mrs said the same thing at the game ( in between asking what offside meant!)

I noticed it against inversnecky. Thought it was just that game, but he had them on again yesterday.

Maybe lucky socks. Also his shorts. I keep thinking he'll trip over them

The holes may well be so he can put them on his feet.

Noticed it at the Patrick game a couple of weeks ago and again yesterday either he's cutting holes in them or has a really bad moth infestation in his house

Noticed the holes during the Inverness game, thought it was due to bad tackles.

Then saw them again yesterday thinking we were toiling to buy new socks.

A lot of players wear the specialist non slip socks, Trussoxs. As they're not club socks they have to cut the teams sock and they wear the top half of them.

Doesn't explain the cat clawed effect though??

His shorts can add a yard or two of speed when we have the wind behind us, but with the wind against us could prove costly

Hadn't noticed but I think Gareth Bale cut holes into his to relieve pressure on the calfs. Maybe Tony trying it for similar reasons

I'm sure Christian Vieri used to do this as well

Sports science in behind it I think?

Think it's to stop the calfs from tightening? I could be a million miles from being right, but I have seen a lot of players do it

I heard that the original plan was to sign Zeefuik then Watt became available but we had already ordered shorts for Zeefuik.

I've now googled Watt pictures playing with us and it's definitely Trusox socks he wears. The claw effect is the dots on the heel/calf of the sock.

*sorry don't know how to upload pictures from my phone but here's a link you can see the white dots on the heel;

A few of the players wear them. Indeed I remember wearing the equivalent at secondary school in the early 80s. The holes in Watt's socks are further up on the calf.

Yep seen other pics now, big holes up the calf. Must be as others say to relieve pressure.

So he wears the trusox which are tight but cuts lots of holes in the actual maroon kit socks to relieve pressure??

Is there a point to that?

Theory for Bale is its partly psychological.

Ahhhh the trusox are used to stop feet slipping inside the boots. I thought they were more of a compression type running sock.

Not as bad as Shaqiri  at Stoke but not far off. I often wonder if both players have knees at all !

Non slip you say? Take it he didn't know about these before the Celtic game?

Trusox are one of the few things that can actually make a difference when worn by a high level player with sharp changes of direction. The holes are actually square pieces of metallic material that grip the inside of your boots, giving you an advantage in sharp turns or acceleration. Most of the high profile players currently playing wear them.
