I heard a stat on sport sound that said that out of 48 games this season Celtic have started 47 different line ups.(it might be 48 in 49, not sure). That seemed quite shocking. What's our stat this season? Anywhere close?

In modern times, I would imagine the team of 85/86 was pretty consistent in its selection but for maybe Iain Jardine/Kenny Black maybe swapping in an out of the team.

Smith, Kidd, Whittaker, Jardine, Levein, Berry, Mackay, Black/Jardine, Colquhoun, Clark, Robertson

I'll post the answer tomorrow.

Probably low teens. Only had 14 or 15 players on the books at beginning of last century leading up to WW1.

Thought of that era myself.

Black/Jardine

Cowie right back,Roddy centre half and Black could play left back if required would be the main changes.

Outside of the same starting 11 going from one season into another does it include friendlies or non competitive games?

Back in the days when hibs won Scottish cups I reckon players only got dropped if they had leprosy or aids. I'll go for 24 circa 1900

1    Duff Willie
2    Parker Bobby
3    MacKenzie Tom
4    Mackay Dave

Not that I was privileged enough to see them but that seems like an 11 you would want to stick with!

20 is quite high really.

In those days changes were forced rather than of choice.

I think even supporters expect change too often these days rather than having patience and letting players get into gear.

Squad game mentality has taken over rather than forging a strongest 11.

George Wright often featured in midfield. Would there be another team with him (instead of Ferguson?) that featured a few times?

All roads lead to Gorgie

You are always going to get injuries, suspensions and players close to a ban being held back for bigger games so changes are part and parcel of the game. However, we seem to tinker around far too much and unlike teams that brought success in the past which more or less picked themselves starting a different formation each week means we are often misjointed. We need to find the strongest team and give it time to gel properly.

Also, from memory, the team that played in the 1997/98 final seemed fairly settled (though Naismith had displaced Pointon only in the latter part of the season)

The 85/86 team more or less started the same with Roddie MacDonald and Iain Jardine the only players to step in when required as far as I remember. Rightly or wrongly players seemed more willing to play with minor knocks back then to keep the continuity going !

SFA thugs and cards have had a lot to do with teams selection rather than rotation by RN

That's the team I watched in my early days as a student in Edinburgh.  In my opinion the best Hearts team ever !!!!!! A real joy to behold and scoring goals for fun.

Is big Freddie the only survivor from that team, Davie?

I'll guess there were a very small number of changes each time though. We had 5 or 6 players who played 40 plus games.

Baird missed quite a few through suspensions

Yep, look at Leicester. Been lucky with injuries but well balanced and a consistent selection.

I heard the stats for Celtic on Sportsound too, genuinely surprised at it. Not so surprised at our stats, mainly cos Neilson like most managers will adjust/tinker with the team depending on various factors. I would expect most sides to change slightly for home or away. Anyone got the stats for other sides, particularly the likes of Aberdeen/Ross County/Dundee/Dundee Utd?

do they injure themselves, no they get clobbered and of course the last part is your opinion.

We have evidence that players are dropped because of injury/suspension, whereas what do you have that it's RN over thinks it.

So during the period when we had our most settled formation we won the League Cup, beat Hibs 5-1 in league and 5-0 in Scottish Cup and also during this period won away friendlies at Easter Rd, Newcastle & Leeds.

A lesson from history??
