Goalkeeper training? (NHC)

OK, wasn't sure if this should be in the Terrace or Shed, but it is football-related, so here goes...

Does anyone know of anyone or anywhere in or around the Edinburgh area which offers good goalkeeper training? Got a 13-year-old son who is a keeper for a boys' club (u14 level next season) and although he trains regularly with his own club, I feel he could do with more specialised training now. He was going to one goalkeeping school, but I'm not all that happy with the progress he's made there, so just wondered if any of my fellow Kickbackers had any recommendations?

I think there is a Coerver type coaching course up at Riccarton on a Friday afternoon. Think Henry Smith helps out.

BJT - Am I right in saying that you are Gorebridge based?

If so it may be worth giving Keith Wright a call (yes that KW).

He is the local SFA community coach and he may be the best to advise you.

Keith Wright, tel: 0131 271 3351

What club does your son play for?

Thanks guys - unfortunately, he's already done the Coerver courses at Riccarton and also the SFA-based ones. He's really progressed beyond that stage and looking for something at a wee bit of a higher level now. His club does play in the Eastern Region league and I've looked on their website without any success either. Just thought someone on here might have a lad doing something similar or could give me some ideas.

PS: Tynie1874 - the Dunfermline one might be of use, so I'll check that out, thanks.

Just be as pushy as you can... clean sheets = dinner.... no clean sheets = no food or play for a week... he'll learn soon enough that putting your body on the line in a game = food.

Failing that just make sure he's mental... all the best keepers have a mental streak.... our craig being the exception.

Oh and I'm sure if you offer an ex keeper cash per hour they'll help you out.

Oh, I'm sure he qualifies on the "mental" score - he's inherited that from his father!

And I don't know any ex-keepers who could help!!! He's done pretty well this season - kept quite a few clean sheets - but obviously he's quite keen to carry on improving his skills, and I don't really feel he's improved as much as he could have at the training he has been attending.

I was jesting... but good to know he's a tad mental.

Re ex goal keepers... is their no one @ his club or with in the leagues you could ask for one to one??

Even some of the coaches he's came across through his various clubs?

Not sure - the only thing his club's recommended is the SFA-run coaching, which he's done several times now and is really starting to get a bit bored with. He's played for the same club for quite a few years now too.

Knowing someone who's involved in the Hearts 'keeper coaching at Riccarton I can understand why you maybe think he's 'outgrown' that level, but believe me, it will do him no harm to stick with it because its dedication that will make him a better keeper, not simply jumping about from coach to coach. Goalkeeping is a bit like being a golfer - you don't get your handicap down overnight, its work work work at the same boring things to achieve the small improvements that make the difference!

Having checked the Hearts website I see Hearts now run two seperate Friday sessions at Riccarton and one seems to be an advanced session run solely by Henry Smith. If I were you I'd get him into that one - I've seen Henry doing a coaching session and I'd think you'd be hard pressed to find much better for a kid your son's age.

Thanks for your post, but unfortunately, he can't attend the Friday sessions at Riccarton because he's still at school while they're on. I'd be all for him going to the one with Henry Smith if possible though - that sounds great. Don't get me wrong, he's not a quitter or afraid to put the work in, but if you're going to training all the time and seeing little improvement, it can get a bit disheartening.

Advanced Goalkeeping classes are also available on a Tuesday from 5-6.30pm at the Academy. This is coached every week by Henry Smith, and is very challenguing with an excellent standard of goalies, including some pro youth. This session is aimed at Advanced and club goalkeeper of a high standard, so would involve a short trial period. Call Hearts Trust on 0870 3600 442, they can advise ref places.
