You need to make sure that cookies are enabled ( internet options, privacy tab, accept all cookies )

Make sure you do not have any cookie blocking software installed (firewall program)

Make sure your system date / time / month / year and especially time zone settings are correct for the location you are at.

Open up IE, click on HELP, About INTERNET EXPLORER and make sure it also says 128-bit cipher strength

Gmail mate it's the future, I've used it.
Hopefully neither hotmail or googlemail are the future, considering that using them means the US government can, at any time it wants, demand access to your mail and at the same time prevent you from finding out about it.

Don't get involved in anything that could land you in trouble with the US government then.

Problem solved.

Jesus Feck, JKB must be full of terrorists if we have to worry about the CIA delving into our Hotmail accounts.

They may find out, I am into money laundering schemes, that buy into fake viagra and rolex watches, and that in my spare time I am into casual sex with casual woman in my area looking for ther same.

It's nothing to do with getting into trouble with the US Government as I do use Googlemail, but only for stuff I don't care if anybody sees. For anything even slightly private I wouln't use it as I don't particularly want some US government nosey git looking at stuff I wouldn't show to my family or friends.

If I remember rightly the JKB servers are held in the US, so the US government might know all about that now.;)

You would need to find a service that doesn't keep any of it's servers in the US (or even the UK if you really want to be as paranoid as me;)). Off the top of my head I can't think of one.

See the bit in the middle

Under the US Patriot Act the FBI and other agencies can demand to see content stored on any computer, even if it being hosted on behalf of another sovereign state.

If your data hosting company gets a National Security Letter then not only do they have to hand over the information, they are forbidden from telling you or anyone else - apart from their lawyer - about it.

and the bit at the end

Those of us who use the cloud just need to be clear about the realities of the situation - and not send or store anything on GoogleMail or HotMail that the US government might want to use against us.

TBH, I don't see what the big deal is.

This part - "Under the US Patriot Act the FBI and other agencies can demand to see content stored on any computer, even if it being hosted on behalf of another sovereign state" - means nothing really.

It just means that now they can legally "demand" to see the info, but so what?

They've had the capability to do the same whenever they wanted for years. Do you think that just because the patriot act is now in effect that they've only started doing this?

And don't think it's only the US goverment and US based servers either.

See this Echelon wiki link for more basic details... e.g.

the term ECHELON is used in a number of contexts, but that the evidence presented indicates that it was the name for a signals intelligence collection system. The report concludes that, on the basis of evidence presented, ECHELON was capable of interception and content inspection of telephone calls, fax, e-mail and other data traffic globally through the interception of communication bearers including satellite transmission, public switched telephone networks and microwave links

At the end of the day, unless you've got something to hide you've got nothing to worry about.

It's not really a problem (apart from privacy issues) at the moment. But as cloud computing gets more common it could become an issue in relation to companies. It's not so much that they can look, it's that they can look without you ever being aware of it.
