The stuff reported in this story gets on my tabs.

Driving is a luxury. If you can't afford it, you don't do it. Folk in this story complaining about tax rises hitting the poorest drivers (and they don't mean my wife - boom, boom) should put 2 together with 2 and come up with 4.

The poorest drivers have the most polluting cars (give or take). The tax is imposed in the spirit of reducing carbon emissions and getting the old, smelly cars off the road. If the result is that there are fewer drivers, poorer or richer, on the road then the tax has done its job.

I must ask the government if the will come and drive my parent s around. As they wouldnt get out much if I didnt have a car...

Put up the tax on cigarettes more to stop the increase on road tax...

So why should non driving smokers pay for your car?

As for your parents, the free bus passes for pensioners were meant to do that, obviously not suitable for everyone but tbh your moaning about what is a very small amount in comparison to the alternative taxes they would introduce to replace it

The road tax doesnt bother me at all, mines is only ?35 a year or something :)

35 quid a year for mines too. happy days!

It can be a pain in the rectum tho. I'm just sick of paying tax for everythin near enough and with all the tax rises in recent years I'm not seeing much more improvement than i did before they hiked up the tax's

What about people that live in rural areas with little or no public transport?

Let's have none of that socialist re-distribution stuff. In a liberal society they can make their economic decisions and move elsewhere should they choose. :cool_shades:

I dinnae even mind the ?2 an hour on the few occasions I need to take my motor to work, but I do mind having to move it every 4 hours to a new parking space! What's that all about?

Tam's Bird its just a token effort to try and discourage people form parking in the bays all day. There aren't enough wardens to monitor people doing what you occasionally do i.e. move your car when the time is up. What also annoys me is that you may pay for an hour or two in anticipation of being there a while but something happens that means you leave before your time is up so you lose money. You can't even use the balance at another pay parking zone!

I see the Government is trying to defend their road tax increases by saying they understand motorists concerns' but it's "necessary for the environment". Absolutely laughable, it doesn't help the environment at all and is just another snidey stealth tax.

Well Mr Brown and Mr Darling here's news for you. I don't believe in global warming. The temperature of the planet has always fluctuated. And only a few weeks ago I bought a gas guzzler that will cost me ?400 in road tax when I renew next month. So GIRUY - sideways.

Was having this conversation with the boys in work a few weeks ago, the lead Mechanical Engineer has just bought himself a '54 plate Nissan 350Z which in 2010 he'll be paying ?455 a year for....

What you need to do is get an RX7 like me, Outrageously rapid, registered pre-2001 and because its a rotary engine, its classed as a 1300cc = ?140 a year in tax forever = RESULT!!

Mwah-ha-ha-ha... :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Sorry, not too helpful to the OP but kind of relevant

?35 for a small car, ridiculous, they still sit in traffic jams and cause pollution! My bike on the other hand does not but I still pay 60 odd quid a year for the privilege. Barstewards!!!!

And this from a Labour government who promised to promote biking as part of the solution to transport problems!

Old tractors & red diesel. Darling will never get his hands on ya!

It's all part of the equation. If you're going to live in the countryside, all sorts of things become necessities that aren't when you're in the city. You're also stuffed with higher prices of food & fuel.

Anyone who's bought a car in the last 10 years without realising that the Government are out to stitch them on the tax does not deserve a whole lot of sympathy.
