The act of dot counting actually makes you look like your doing something worthwhile, giving off the impression you are a grafter and getting him off your back. Writing down your findings on a pad and using a calculator to work out the remaining seats only adds to the authenticity. Never, EVER do anything for free when you can be paid for doing it. I'm sure this was done many years ago.
