Will there ever be world peace?

Watching the news recently has made my realise the world is an extremely depressing/nasty place. I already knew this, but it seems to be getting worse by the day.

Every story seems to be about bombing, terrorism, government corruption, drugs etc. Will it ever stop?

Obviously eradicating silly things such as religion would help, but in terms of political wars/conflicts will such things always exist?

Don't overlook the fact that what gets reported as 'news' is not at all truly reflective of what goes on in the world. There's a lot of great stuff happening too - it just hardly gets ay publicity.

Hasnt been a lot of peace up to now so seriously doubt there will ever be real world peace.

In saying that, I know way more nice people than evil people so maybe theres hope.

I agree to an extent. But it seems like greed is outweighing the good things just now. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer the world over and I have no idea how anyone could fix that.

Based on history and human nature, not a hope in hell

Globalisation, commercialisation and the growth of corporate power over government could lead to a kind of lethargic state of world peace, as the pattern of development in Western Europe in the last 60 years could be interpretted. Economic slavery will be rife but financial supression could repress 'war' as such, if war is defined as battles between countries.

An occurrence on an apocalyptic level that halts population growth may speed up or halt this mind.

nb: I just made this all up while having a shower.

Unless there is a massive change of consciousness in humans then I doubt it.

Na. Fighting is in the human make up.

We'll go extinct long before we ever learn to live peacefully with each other.

No chance of seeing peace in this world. Look at the middle east, Iraq Afghanistan Syria Israel palastine Pakistan all fighting. Then we got Russia Ukraine. Followed by the crazy north Koreans. Also we got the biggest problem of it all America! The biggest terrorist organisation in the world.

We are all pretty much screwed. And don't be surprised to see a full scale world war 3. It's already starting.

We can hardly look out into the wider world, tut and shake our heads when we can't get those ###### across the M8 to stop stabbing each other in the name of another country's religious tensions.

Steven Pinker's "The Better Angels of our Nature" is a fascinating book about a long-term decline in all types of violence - war, murder, assault, rape, etc. It seems we are living in, in general, the most peaceful period of human history.

There has never been true peace, and never will be, we are more aware now of conflicts that in the past would have been a mention on the radio in places most of us never heard of. Now with communications and travel as they are we are more aware of places amd people. As in the big plane crash thread I doubt there will be a WW3, but humanity will live with localised disputes that the big boys will enter occasionally. The realisation that a nuclear war is a lose lose situation will contain the expansion of conflict, but will never nullify it totally.

No there wont, but the world is getting more and more peaceful as each generation passes.

The percentage of humans dying a "violent" death now compared to 200, 1000, 5000 or 50,000 years ago is significantly smaller.

There aren't enough resources to go around, so n****s always be starting some shit, somewhere.

If we can crack nuclear fusion, and a lot of experts reckon we could in the next 50 years, then I reckon we might have a chance.

All the energy the entire world would need? Takes away the need to be fighting over resources which is what most wars are about.

I know some will say religion but, in my opinion, that's just the excuse to get support.

Global socialist revolution.

Peace naturally follows.

Eventually...

All roads lead to Gorgie

No because every country in the world has had bits of its territory under someone else's power in the past and someone will always want that part back no matter how many years have passed. Throw in religion and that exasperates the situation.

Answer: remove nation states. Merely constructs of the bourgeoise to dilute the political consciousness of the working class with false consciousness through things like nationalism.

No chance. Everyone hates each other.

Have you seen the film crash, where no matter how far down the food chain you go, there's always someone left to pick on or discriminate against? That's the world.

Disagree. What if that "tribe" is the proletariat?

I probably watch too many SciFi type films but maybe only ever happen in the event of some calamitous or apocalyptic type event where we truly have to unite for our literal survival. Or perhaps friendly encounter with alien race which then makes us take a look at ourselves. Or possibly God appearing to everyone en-masse and basically saying next one to make war etc. in His/Her name gets well and truly claimed!

A complete and utter fantasy though

That it will happen?

Possibly, however as capitalism creaks, and the environment mis-fires and eventually fails, no doubt our "leaders" will rally us all in a cataclysmic war of the world, akin to Orwell's 1984. If only the people could see through all the bullshit and just get on with living.

I agree Boris, and voting yes won't help your consciousness become true.

Many Socialists voted for the national socialists in Germany in 1933 using the same reasoning. That went well
