******** Tram

All Gone Wrong

Recommended Posts

The trams do look pretty slow though. I commute from W Lothian and work in Princes St. Since Edinburgh Park station has opened I've driven to Hermiston Gait and got the train in from Edinburgh Park station. It's 9/10 minutes from Edin Park to Waverley, it's pretty reliable and there are 6 services an hour.

The tram route should be really appealing to folks like me but even with no passengers in them the trams take about 20 mins for the same journey. No thanks.

Tell us more about all these petitions. Would also like to hear more about which cities have tram "networks" where there is one third of a line and **** all else.

Not sure how 14km out of 18km is only one third, but you're right - it should be extended, initially down to Leith (the most densely populated part of Scotland - ideal for high capacity public transport) and then maybe the Granton Loop, up the Bridges to Little France, maybe along London Road to Meadowbank and Portobello. Then we would have a worthwhile network.

The population of Edinburgh is forecast to rise to almost 620,000 over the next 25 years - that's a lot of extra traffic.

The trams were always a socialist idea and like all things socialist expensive and will always breakdown, waste money in the end be scrapped after many years of trying to fix a botched job. The next great idea another road bridge whereas a tunnel would have been better.no need to worry about the weather. Monkies in charge of a typewriter

the road bridge was built because the geology under the forth ruled out a tunnel ie its rock not earth/clay. Trams work well all over Europe irrespective of the party in charge there.

Trams in Europe tend to pass areas that the people stay , ours doesn't .

Sydney only has one tram (light rail) line, but it is great. They're building more (which cause angst as the roadworks happen).

What Edinburgh needs is a monorail.

Agreed. I think EARL made more sense than GARL but it was very expensive.

More expensive than the ?1.6bn the 8 miles of toy-town railway are costing?

But the airport bus leaves every 8 mins 24 hrs a day, does it not?

Not sure the bus is 24 hrs a day as I don't think the airport is open 24 hrs a day. However, I firmly believe the bus service will be significantly reduced over the coming months/years to force people onto the tram. After all the bus leaves from Waverley Bridge the Tram about 300 yes north in St Andrew Sq.

Yep, look at how much the bus fare has risen since trams announced..

?1.6 billion now?

As worked out by one of the worlds leading credit report companies so I'm told. The only thing I'm unsure is if that's their figure for the build cost or if their figures include things like cost to local economy/businesses during construction.

Kind of difficult to work all that out. Especially since the tram works coincided with the worst recession in living memory.I wonder if they then subtract things like the improvement to trade, increased business rates from properties along the line and reduced disruption because of all the replaced utilities along the route?

From next month the airport bus will be a 24 hour service.

It may well be revised to force people to use the white elephant.

I don't think anyone will be 'forced' to use the tram.

The new Forth Road Bridge is costing a mere ?3,000,000,000 LESS than was planned by the previous Lab/Lib executive. When the plan was first published they were attacked by [modedit] for building a cut-price bridge !!!!!!!!!!!

The tram would have been scrapped in 2007 but the entire opposition in Parliament voted for it. Said that I would have been a ?130 Million down the drain. Nothing the SNP Government could do as they'd have been doomed to lose a no-confidence vote as they wouldn't have been able to pass their budget.

EARL was just another one of labours money wasting projects. Re-route 2 major rail lines through a tunnel built under the active runway. Nothing could possibly go wrong there.

A train halt where the line passes Turnhouse and one to the Glasgow line at Ratho Station with a free guided busway/tram to the terminal is all that is really needed. Has the same result but hundreds o millions of pounds saved.
