Wish michael owen would stfu with the "it was a definite red!!" It was going wide ya badword muppet!

If a dangerous cross is put into the box and before a forward comes in with a header to put it in the net the defender punches it away!!! Is it a red card?

From the FA website.

  • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

For me it wasn't denying a goal scoring opportunity if the ball was going wide anyway...

Few people possibly having to eat their words?

To be fair to the ref, I can almost give him that it might have been hard to tell defininitively if it was going wide or not, therefore red is just about acceptable. Sending off the wrong man though

yes but in this case the player has taken a shot which is going wide. The handball does not therefore deny a goalscoring opportunity.

Never ceases to amaze me how few people know basic rules in football

Always happy to hold my hand up if I'm wrong so apologies mate.

It adds: "Referees are reminded that deliberately handling the ball is normally punished only by a direct free-kick or penalty kick if the offence occurred inside the penalty area.

"A caution or dismissal is not normally required."

Edit: I quoted the wrong post, meant to quote one of jambof3tornado's posts.

Exactly how I see.

Can't blame the ref for that though as it did look like it was going in.

Regardless however, a yellow (for OX!) and a penalty awarded would have been the right call.

I think you'd be hard pushed to find a decision anywhere in football if a defender dives and palms a shot away wether it's going in or not where it wouldn't be a red card.

As an aside, is the fourth official allowed to intervene due to something he's seen on a monitor? Ref and linesman didn't look like they'd seen it.

I don't think you would, unless referees all over are blatantly disregarding the rules of the game.

if it had been going 2 feet wide it would be easier to get correct. But in this case it was close but if the ref isnt 100% sure it was denying a goalscoring opportunity he cannot send the man off(or the wrong man in this case).

How good would it be if Arsenal get something out of this and Oxlade Chamberlain plays a part in all the goals ?!

Can the ref show a card incorrectly then change his mind if he got it wrong? (I mean if he immediately realises the error).

To be fair, it can also be a red card and a penalty if it hits a defender on the head in his own penalty box. Mind you, I don't think that is in the rules either.

Destruction for Arsenal again in a big game.Wenger will again say everything is all fine and rosey though when the simple fact is they are nowhere near good enough.

All this because Giroud stubbed at the ball with only the keeper to beat

The only thing left for Wenger now is to batter Jose in his technical area. Now that would be a celebration for the ages.

The ref didn't seem to see the incident and so couldn't have seen it was going wide. The linesman couldn't possibly have judged whether it was going wide or was on

target.

Arsenal have been so poor its hard to take into account the standard of officiating.

They really do lack some bite in the middle.

Arteta is honking.

Mertersacker is like a slug pace wise.

Keeper is decent but having a poor game.

Need to spend some money to keep up the top four challenge next year.

The red card ******-up will most likely mask the shocking tactics employed by AW ... lets just hope that a few in the media at least have a go at him for playing a high line with minimal DM (if any) cover against the self-described counter-attacking guru.

Can you be sent of for ungentlemanly conduct? If so, id suggest that diving and saving the ball with your hand fits the bill.

He may not be Usain Bolt but he has probably been one of their top performers this season.

I do however agree with you that this loss is not about the officiating.
