Craigieboy
Van actually. Citroen Berlingo. To cut a long story short, the oil cap has emulsified oil on it indicating that the cylinder gasket is away. Also, the van stutters when started which seems to suggest that there is coolant fluid on the spark plugs, consistent with the gasket being a gonner. Is there a chance that it could be anything other than that? The question is, if it is the gasket; How much do these repairs cost these days. Especially if the thing needs skimmed. The van is over 7 year old & has 60 000 miles on the clock. I'd have liked to have gotten a few more years out of it but if the repair is going to cost too much, is it worth it? Would anyone bin the van & buy a new one in these circumstances?

heartsfc_fan
60k is quite low for something like that to go. Well worth fixing I think. You should get another 60k out of it no bother with regular servicing.
Craigieboy
Thanks. I thought that. But it's quite a big job. Expensive too. I thought it was in the region of 800.
rael11
My last car (petrol Seat Altea) had emulsified oil on the cap for about 5 years despite regular (ish) cleaning. Never had any other bother with it so it might not be that serious. But then again it might.
Magic Numbers
I take it this is a petrol Berlingo? Do you do much miles with it? I would try an oil flush, new oil & oil filter, plus a set of plugs as a starting point. Petrol engines that are not doing big miles can have condensation inside the top of the engine which becomes evident when you remove the cap. Good luck! Not that I would have any knowledge of anyone who could do that for you of course.
