I wouldn't go to Turkey again if you paid me. There's a reason it tends to be amongst the cheapest holiday spots to go to bud. Just my opinion though.

Icmeler is great.

More relaxed atmosphere than Marmaris, but still plenty to do at night and loads to do during the day.

If you do fancy a more lively night, then Marmaris is only 7km away and there's plenty buses that take you there.

Was skeptical before I went to Turkey but it turned out to be great. It does get extremely hot though, sometimes a bit too hot.

Love Turkey - usually go twice a year. Fascinating country, lovely people and fantastic food - ever better value than usual at the moment because the Turkish lira is weak against the pound right now. I personally wouldn't go all inclusive because we like to get out and about and eat local, but it all depends what you want from your holiday.

I really like Turkey for a holiday, but only late on in the season say late September/early October as the heat is bearable ( for me) at that time. Have been to Olu Deniz a few times. Nice vibe, no chavs or pi ssed up bampots, good bars & restuarants.

I have been going for the last 12 years. For the last 6 we have gone to Dalyan which is ideal for a laid back time, close to Dalaman airport, excellent beach 20 minutes by Dolmus or water taxi. Not ideal for the younger crowd but for us 40 somethings, perfect :2thumbsup:

July and August is a bit hot, June or September is best time to go.

Totally agree, far too much choice and part of the Turkish experience is to get out and about, meet great people and eat fantastic food washed down with plentiful jugs of Efes :2thumbsup:

Been to Turkey twice and both times been astounded by how friendly and welcoming the people are, in the touristy parts and in more central parts. An amazing country to visit.

Looks like we're heading to Turunc which is near Icmeler, wee bit quieter but at our age looks perfect.

I've been to turunc a few times now! Cracking wee place. You can get the taxi boat into marmaris at night if you fancy it.

I avoided it for years and then ended up going to Icmeler a while back on a cheap last minute deal I picked up at Newcastle airport. Very pleasantly surprised with it, nice little town and enough to do. Not for party animals though. We went into Marmaris for a day and didn't stay long as it was too busy for our tastes.

Always fancied turkey but found the flight times are always a nightmare, usually coming back at 2 or 3 in the morning so have never been mainly for that reason

went to icmeler last year

Hated it

Far too much britishness about it, everywhere u went they wanted ur pound not local currency, hal the time they quoted u in pound as price and didnt no the lira equivalent.

Food was same everywhere u go, only good grub was in a local cafe slipped away out of sight local food.

Would never go back

Agreed.

We went to Marmaris early May and really enjoyed it, they are great with kids.

Going back again this year as we enjoyed ourselves and my sister works as a rep at Dalaman airport.

Went to marmaris during July/August and it was easily hitting mid-high 40's in temperature.

I went all inclusive, the fokd was good but really repetitive.

The only issue I had was the mosque near our hotel going off four times a day but in two weeks it only woke me once.

Remember you get harassed from people but be polite and they move on.

Edit : there it two water parks in marmaris, they aren't huge but there still decent.

Don't eat any fruit that an old lady sells on the beach. I did, and for a day, i couldn't venture more than 10 yards from a toilet.

Booked again for 3rd year in a row. Having never ever fancied it before I booked as a last minute cheap deal and totally loved it. We are going to same place again, Armutalan region right on the edge of Marmaris. It's a 15 minute walk to the beach and all the nightlife if thats what you are looking for, But we stayed away from the busy parts. The jeep safari is briliant, as is the dalyan river cruise. In fact there are loads of really good trips that take you out and about to see the "real Turkey" and the way the Turkish people live. The food is tremendous and really cheap (same with drinks) And the people are so friendly. Yes, you get the people in the streets trying to get you into their places if you are in the busy areas, but avoid them and you will be fine. I go on my own with the kids and they are made to feel so welcome everywhere.

probably because so many British people go to Icmeler they have adapted their style to suit, which is a shame.

As much as I love Turkey, I hated Marmaris because of the over commercialism and over enthusiastic approach of the locals - it really is a Turkish Benidorm and I know of people who swear by it, but its not for me.

You dont get the same problems in the smaller less developed resorts but you do get the friendliness, the wider food choice (more traditionally Turkish) and the chilled lifestyle.

It also makes sense to use the Turkish Airlines route from Edinburgh , staying in Istanbul for a couple of nights before a quick connection to your local airport.

It is one of the most magical cities I have ever been to and cant wait for our 3rd visit this summer. Crazy place but utterly brilliant !

Would recommend AES which is in Ovacik, its all inclusive, we tended to go out for dinner most nights to see a bit of Fethiye, Oludeniz, Hisoronu but I found it good having the all inclusive as a base for breakie, lunch and EFES!

Been a few times and would recommend Lara Beach or Side for AI. Some really good 4 & 5 star hotels. We stayed at the Royal Dragon, think there are now 3 Royal hotels in the area and have to say the food was the best we have ever experienced in a AI hotel.

Wasn't impressed with Marmaris or Turgetries though.

We are supposed to be going to Ula Denise(?) in July. The mother in law has been going there for years and my Mrs and her sister joined her for a week, so now we "have" all to go.

"Oh its great Andy you can smoke anywhere", wow,

"You can sit near the beach and watch the para-gliders land", OMFG how have I lived without seeing this before.

"We can all go on the Jeep Safari it's a bit bumpy though", great I'm getting a MRI scan next week to see if my back pain is the disc in my back should be taken out after they messed it up 20 odd years ago. A bumpy car ride will be just what the Doctor Orders.

"It will be quite hot but you can sit and have a drink where ever you want". Aye while wear a false leg in that heat, I'll not be leaving the hotel much.

On the other hand, my Mrs is looking forward to it, It is also part of my daughters 21st present and my sons 18th,3 years and 20 days between kids, rhythm method ::facepaw:::vrface::facepalm::42: and they are looking forward to it, and my 50th is part of it too. I only want to go over the Forth Bridge for my 50th. Everyone else is looking forward to it too, so I'll put on my happy face and get on with it because I like seeing my wife and kids happy.

Stevie I'm like this before most holidays but I'm sure with your prior knowledge we will find somewhere that sells a fry up.

I love Turkey. Have stayed in Side, Dalyan, Icemeler and Bodrum.

I always go AI now, more out of laziness than anything else, but I would encourage you to try as many turkish foods as possible, its all great.

I've only been 4 star - and the food is normally tasty if a little repitive.

Most of the waterparks I've seen aren't up to much - compared to the ones you'll see elsewhere anyway, but there is always other things to do.

You are not able to buy a visa upon arrival in Turkey after April this year. You must purchase one before flying. Just a wee heads up to anyone, like me who is going to Turkey and wasn't aware of these changes...

Good shout - from April 10, you will only be able to purchase your visa online. You can't do it more than three months in advance of travel, and make sure you use the official government website - www.evisa.gov.tr - as there are various other sites which come up when you google it, but a lot of them are rip-offs which will charge you much more than the official fee, which is strangely enough priced in dollars ($20), working out at around ?13 now.

I'm going end of April this year. What's the weather usually like then? In marmaris this time,

I went to Bodrum a few years ago and loved it, last week in September, first in October. Was still hitting 40 degrees then! That was as a couple, with friends. This year it's same couple with the baby.. Different holiday, perhaps, but looking forward to it.

Weather in April and October can be a bit of a mixed bag...especially depending on where you are going, Might get some rain and likely to be a bit cooler at nights. Again, depending on the resort, some don't really open up fully for the season until the beginning of May, so some places may still be closed in April. Similarly, a lot of resorts do start to close down during October, but it's a good time to pick up a bargain too.

That's cool with me, bar the rain. Got the wee one, so not wanting it too hot. Also all inclusive, so although I'll still go out for dinner, it's not a disaster if some places are closed.

Cheers.
