Sherlock
Kilt alongwith a Prince Charlie jacket and vest is acceptable formal evening wear for a black tie event if you don't wear a DJ.

Sherlock
Cheers, what is a DJ (Dinner Jacket??) DJ = dinner jacket, what the septic's call a tuxedo. You shouldn't wear a lounge or business suit to a black tie event.

The Doctor
It doesn't have to be a Prince Charlie (which has tails and a waistcoat) an Argyll will do just as well and is perfectly acceptable. As long as it's black, silver buttons and you wear a bow tie. FFS don't fasten it up at the front!

I much prefer the Argyll jacket and waistcoat because I prefer to wear a tie and hate batwing colars! A kilt and black jacket (BPC or Argyll) is more than appropriate for a black tie event.
