Banks are evil.

Not sure that they're much more evil than the Royal Family, who perpetuate the system, imo.

I can't remember how you spell nouvueaau riche. Anyway, folk are allowed to have money. I don't bother about it. My daughter wants me to bother because she likes shopping. Maybe she will become greedy for cash. I don't think rich folk are any happier than folk without.

Your first point: Yes they are, but it's better if they've earned it.

Your second point:

There are huge problems with Western 'democracy' - no doubt about it.

Start fixing those problems by removing freeloaders like the Royal Family - they're the subject of the thread, btw.

You can call the Royal Family freeloaders if you wish but the idea that they are a problem to democracy is where I take issue. The Queen has been studiously apolitical her whole life. Charlie boy is a little different given his behaviour and expression of views. He threatens the monarchy by taking sides on issues.

If we can't aim to make things better, what's the point?

Sure, but when people can't perceive a bigger picture like the financial crisis and the reality of what is going on, you are wasting your breath. Hence my move towards cynicism over the years. Whoever dreamed up the "bread and circuses" idea was right.

1 - thanks!

2 - you don't remember Liz turning her back on Thatcher, then?

3 - it's my breath to waste.

4 - students of economics should be aware that there is more to life.

Opinion poll in the Guardian (of all places) earlier in the week. Support for the monarchy has increased in the last few years.

And how do you know an elected head of state would 'make things better'? Lots of countries seem to get on fine with being monarchies

That's just one poll - have you asked everybody?

And who's to say what is reasonable reward for their labours? Is a pop star really worth ?100million or more? A footballer ?200k a week?

Has there ever been a poll that has shown a majority in favour of abolition?

I put effort into things and I get rewards. I'm not jealous of folk who have inherited money. People are people, You get good and bad in all walks of life. I couldn't give a toss if people have earned their crust or not. The folk I get involved with is more important to me.
