Got to laugh at the ITV commentary, "Arsenal and Chelsea must be thinking they wont have to much trouble if they face Basle" as Basle are 2-0 up against Manchester United (or 5-3 up on aggregate if it is a two-leg affair.)

Sepp Blatter will be creaming himself.

Who needs goal line technology!

Did you notice the official had to step back and look around the post?

He almost missed it. Why the **** is he not standing a yard back.

What an arrogant remark by the commentator, 'neither the Enhlish sides will have much to fear if they draw Basle'. Oh aye, right enough they scored 3 at Old Trafford and are 2-1 up here. Prick!

Man U proving they are at least an attacking mid, and winger and a striker away from being a quality side.

And they really need a centre half pairing who can stay fit.

Well done Basel. Skilful, well-organised team. Always like to see the underdog doing well unless it wears the green and white rags of the Hobo. I don't suppose it'll make much difference to the cartel in the long run, but it's a pleasing blip.

That might seem seismic on paper; it's really not, because United just aren't very good. They weren't very good last season, when Ferguson did a quite unbelievable job in winning the title and reaching the CL final with, by their standards, a piss poor side; they're not very good this season either, because the young players who've come in are still learning. Many United fans have been expecting something like this: they know how many question marks there are over their team.

Most people wrote Ferguson and United off when they last got knocked out at this stage, in 2005/6. They were wrong, and will probably be wrong again. They'll be back. Meanwhile, the sight of City fans laughing at United on the same night their team got knocked out as well is kinda pitiful; and Craigieboy's gibberish about United the brand and City, the 'proper club' (a proper club who are committing the worst example of financial doping ever seen in the sport's history) is going to get very, very tiresome very, very soon.

Manchester City have spent almost ?500m in three years - and they couldn't get through either. 'Proper club'?

Good summary but, I disagree that Utd will recover to the 2006 extent!

Vidic out, probably for months! Critical!!!

Evans in for months! Critical!

A Young, started really well at Utd but seems to have dropped back into the over-rated player I've always thought he is!

No sound, reliable goalkeeper! Critical!

United out, City out, Valencia out, Dortmund out, Porto out.

Napoli through, Basel through, APOEL Nicosia through.

Cartel not quite under threat - but at least the last 16 line-up's a bit different this year. No doubt all will have normalised by the time we get to the semis, though.

I think the penny might finally drop that the EPL is on a downward spiral, City are absolutely coasting it on the domestic level, but struggle in Europe. Man U have no big names left to put fear into opposition, Chelsea are like Grandad united, with some wee laddie throwing hissy fits, trying to steer the ship. Arsenal deserve some credit, they have managed through despite losing their main Players. The big picture is though, the bubbles popped :teehee:

Yup, you cant read how a leagues fortunes are doing based on one season there needs to be seen over the years. People wrote of the Serie A last season, but for the 8th year in a row three Italian teams are in the knockout stage, and it is always AC and Inter with either Roma, Juventus, Fiorentina or Napoli being the third. This year they are the only league with more then two teams left in the competition.

It remains unbelievable that Fergie did not recognise the problem shown in the previous couple of years - his midfield. Yet again in a crunch game he went with makeshift midfielders - this time Giggs and Jones. And Park in the role that he should have been signing a Shneider type for in the summer.

As for the goalie - he went for the ball like I do in the 5 a sides with my feet! He has no presence and looks a terrible waste of money so far.

So many players not up to the level required.

I think Man City knew that they wouldn't go through after the final whistle went in Naples a fortnight ago. However, it was pretty inconcievable that Man U would go out, and I guarantee that the percentage of Man U fans who thought they were in danger of going out was in single figures. Therefore, City fans are probably entitled to be a bit more cheerful.

And let's not forget the group draws. If you are an English club, what countries do you want to avoid playing clubs from? Spain, Italy and Germany - Man City got a team from all 3. Man U's group - let's be honest - should have been a total walkover. Benfica would be a mild struggle, but no danger they would drop points from the other 4 games.

City have failed, but left with their heads held reasonbl high. This is a colossal embarrassment for Manchester United.

The one player they have missed the most this season is Tom Cleverly, was an important factor to how they looked so good early on in the season, provides the creativity in the team that they lack without Scholes.
