What's a normal wage in Australia?

Damn, looks like I'll be making totally average kind of money then. About $1400 a week.

I have a friend who has just arrived and he is horrified by the cost of living. I think you need to earn 2 1/2 times in dollars what you currently earn in pounds to afford the same things. It used to be the other way around.

Rental properties are horrifically expensive and rising by the week, so factor that in too.

That's ?904 a week seems good to me.More than the average SPL footballer but then as said above if you take in the average cost of living being 2.5 times the cost of here it's not quite so rosy.

Minimum wage providing you are 21 is $16 an hour which currently is roughly ?10 but as other have said the cost of living is so much higher - if you can get a pint under $7 well done!

Cost of living isn't 2.5 times, but taking into account exchange rate you probably need 250 dollars for every 100 quid you currently earn.

Rent is brutal, drink is expensive and supermarket shopping pretty horrendous. Petrol is cheaper, but a decent 2nd hand car costs a packet.

Been in oz a month, spent a silly amount in Sydney, feel like I emptied a case of money off the harbour bridge.

As for a night out, forget about it.........

As others have said cost of living is horrendous but there is money to be earned.

Not sure what it is that you do Tazio but make sure you don't get hoodwinked because you don't understand the value of the work that you are doing in Oz. Those average wages are not a good indication if you are doing anything that is specialist or connected to oil/gas/resource sector.

The contract is already in place with the agreed wages. The deal is that I will be working for my current employers but the Australian end of the job will pay the wages while I'm out there so the contract is in line with Aussie union rates etc. On paper it looks like a hefty pay rise compared to what I earn here but I was just curious if it was in real terms.

The $7 beer is a bit of a sickener, however using the beer system of earning calculation (weekly wage divided by cost of a pint) it isn't too bad.

Oh well, not much you can do about it then. I live in Perth and I wish you could get a beer for $7. Going rate here is now $10 plus.

It's why mnost people go to Bali for their holidays.

Obviously avoid any pub in the tourist ares. In Sydney, try the Century Hotel, hidden upstairs from a Huigry Jack's in George Street, down from Town Hall. Several tap beers only $3 a schooner.(equivalent of $4 a pint). They serve jugs as well. There's a backpacker place upstairs from it.

I'm only in Sydney for a week, and as I'm working at the Opera House I imagine it's fairly expensive round there. I've got a week in Woolongong, a week in Sydney, back to the UK or a month. And then back to a week in Canberra, another week in Woolongong followed by 3 weeks in Brisbane.

Im currently in Australia doing a working visa. Wages are good, i have done farm work and got around 13 pound per hour doing it. If you go for more skilled jobs, I.T/ sparky / plumber or whatever. You can earn near 20 quid an hour pretty easily.

Price of living is more expensive though, pay about 100 quid per week for a hostel. So appartments are a bit more expensive

i've been looking into this as i'm planning on emigrating in about 2 years. One of my mates works for a global recruitment company so i've had him keeping an eye on openings for me. Met him at a wedding on saturday and he was telling me that they've got positions in Perth (Offshore Gas) that would suit me (Chemical Engineer) that are starting at ?102k/yr. Hell yeah, i'll have some of that!!!

Make sure you check the cost of accommodation before you commit. The money is good, but to rent a family home will cost an absolute packet. Perth is frighteningly expensive because of the mining boom.

This is true. Was in Perth for over a year and it is mentally expensive. As someone above said, you will pushing $11 a pint in a lot of places in Northbridge.

If you are over that way for working holiday, I would strongly suggest trying to get on to the minesite, even for a couple of swings. I had three swings up there for 2 weeks each (working 12 hours a day, seven days a week mind) and it set me up for travelling the West and East coast. Get all your accomodation and food paid and its bloody hard to spend any money whatsoever. Basically, 6 weeks work and I earned about 10 grand.

Makes you a week bit sick though, as I (and the people I was working with) was by far and away the worst paid person on the minesite. Get up there in a proper, skilled job and you would be starting around $95k. With that wage, you could just about afford a night out in Northbridge...

Whereabouts are you staying about man? I'm going over on a WHV soon and will be going with a few grand in the bank with a view to getting some work over there in mu field of expertise (IT). Here i can earn ?300 per day contracting but I've no idea what he equivelant jobs would pay in Oz.

I'll be staying with family in Perth initially so that gives me a cushion but tbh I'm a bit put off by the absurd prices being quoted here.

Not really bothered about the cost of living or wages cos I'm just planning on loafing out the back yard with a slab of VB for the first few months while the Mrs earns the bread.

Don't stress about it mate, your pay will be relative to the cost of living. Perth is a cracking city, you'll have a brilliant time.

Have a cousin (big Hearts' man) lives just south of Perth, place called Rockingham. They emigrated there about 6 years ago and love it. I haven't yet made it for a visit, due to my penchant for constantly going home.

Also, the company I'm with here have recently expanded into Oz, a wee place called Roma which is about 500 kliks west of Brisbane. They're getting their foot in the door of the O&G service industry, mainly on the cementing side, for starters.

I'm moving there next week, also on a one year working visa and find this thread pretty terrifying. Any advice from fellow working visa or Perth residents would be greatly appreciated

The last time VB saw the light of day was when it left the horse.

If they've got Cooper's Pale Ale on tap, go for it.

Like anywhere, some of the small (hate the "boutique" label) brews are good and some are just for w?nkers.

(Mind you, my taste buds may be a bit iffy. They got a good grounding at 6 Palmerston Place)

Its not been as easy to get a job as some folk made out, maybe just my bad luck so far. If your stayin in a big city a job is a must, even if you are minted. Im having a gd time but in all honesty its not that much diff fi back home imo. Think a job and routine def help, dossin about like Ive been is actually not that enjoyable. Beer can be cheap once you know where to go,well cheaper than normal, trouble is,takes bit of trial and error and spending some coin!

Rockingham is great if you like flannel shirts and mullets, and thats the chicks.

It's about 45 mins south of perth and is a great spot by the ocean just a pity about some of the locals. You would get a cheap pint down there though.

Depends on shortages. I've seen wages for welders in the mines or in oil and gas at 150k a year.

Shame I can't be arsed with it anymore.

Best beer in Oz is by far Little Creatures Pale Ale.

Little Creatures is also the best pub/brewery in WA. POssibly Oz.

Well worth a visit if your in Freo.

The Imp is heading to the Rockingham of the East. Geelong has a healthy bogan culture too. Great location for beach and surf life though - gateway to Torquay, Lorne, Bells Beach etc.

I've spent plenty of time in Geelong and found the locals spot on, tbh.

Got married there and spent many hours relaxing in their excellent cafes, bars and restaurants ;).

Lovely harbour, plenty of good schools for the wee one and with The Great Ocean Road on your doorstep, it's not a bad spot. :smuggy:

A beachside bogan is a happy bogan and their team won the premiership flag this year, so there'll be a big feelgood factor down there this year. Good times.

30 degrees today in sunny Melbourne.
