Tams bird
Turned off laptop last night as normal. Today it's just a black screen. Makes a noise like trying to start but that's it. Any ideas? Nothing too tricky as I'm pc stupid...

GazzaBroon
Sounds like the hard drive is ######! New hard drive is around ?50 but you will lose all your data. A specialist would charge a few hundred to recover the data if you really needed to. Hope not though, try looking to see if the hard drive has dislodged somehow and push it back in again. Didn't see this thread, sorry.
Moncs
If it was the hard drive then the chances are it would still start and allow you to enter the BIOS etc but fail to boot due to not seeing the hard disk. Could be a motherboard issue, hard to tell without seeing it. Whats the make/model and what lights come on when you start it up? Unless the hard disk surface has been damaged it should be easy to get the data back using the right device as I have done it many times
Tommy Wiseau
I had exactly this with a work laptop and pressing Fn/F8 at the same time fixed it - but that was one I use with a projector a lot, so was to do with the display settings and possibly not the same issue.
