Ok, without naming names, dont want this turning into a blame-game thread.

How many of our first team squad are good enough to mount a league challenge?

how many would you bin?

I count 4 I'd keep, the rest? let them go.....sad but close to true

How much longer are we going to beat ourselves up over this it happened we are what we are unless some serious funds are to be had for Paulo the only changes we will see will be style of play and its effectiveness .

I would keep them ALL. I really believe we have a decent squad that can apply some pressure on Rangers this season - I think Celtic look good (As much as it pains me to say).

I'd only keep Kello. Maybe holt and Denis as well even though I haven't seen them they are miles better than anyone else. What do I win :whistling:

Any hope of mounting a challenge:

Kello

Signing Signing Signing Grainger

Driver Signing Signing Novikovas

Skacel

Sutton

What we need are 2 or 3 players to raise what is a pretty decent SPL squad. Two central midfielders who can pass and also win the ball would be good to play alongside Black or Mrowiec. Then Skacel and either Driver/TempsNovikovas on the other side of a front 3 with Sutton through the middle.Still well short of the title but comfortable for 3rd

Kello

Hamill - Webster - Jonsson - Grainger

New - Black - New

Driver/Temps/Nova - Sutton - Skacel

The rest are no better and some worse than every other spl player omitting old firm players, hence the reason why we struggle to win games.

No.

Which of the players I've replaced would you keep?

I'm basing mines purely on competing with Celtic as I think they'll run away with it. Based on my shaky knowledge of Celtic, their starting XI is:

Forster

Wilson Majstorovic Matthews Mulgrew

Ledley Brown Kayal Commons

Hooper Stokes

No way our current batch of CMs and Defenders could compete with that.

that spurs team last night would have destroyed any team in scotland, stop beating ourselves up, it was a disappointing performance, but, scottish footie is mince compared to what we witnessed last night

I hope you've not drawn your conclusions as a result of last night's game. If we had played as we did last night in an SPL game I am 100% convinced we would have won it. We will never, ever meet a team like that in the SPL, the team we played last night would have won comfortably at either Ibrox or Parkhead (what probably went against us most last night was the postponement of Spurs game at the weekend against Everton. They now have to pick a starting XI versus Man Utd., and had to check the fitness of a few players. Everyone who played last night will be desperate to play against Man U, and weren't going to waste a chance to shine last night).

We have to walk before we can run, and getting the team to play in a style which will help us progress in the SPL is step 1. Making wholesale changes in personnel ain't going to help achieve that, we have to find out what they can offer against SPL sides rather than bin them because a top 6 EPL side gave us a going over.

Novikovas, Skacel and Sutton ?

:shockio:

Novikovas: Most skillful player at the club.

Skacel: Scores from anywhere.

Sutton: Isn't helped at all by Templetons lack of hitting the line.

In a good passing team, Sutton WILL score.

i agree with Sutton but why the other two?

Skacel and Novikovas are not good enough to be part of a championship winning team.

i would say Novikovas isn't yet, i would still keep him though just to see

i think Rudi would be a good super sub

i wouldn't have them in a league winning starting 11, but i would have them in a league winning squad

Not a spurs/hearts comparison here but it is a "can Hearts put in a title challenge thread".

To become a title-challenging side we'd need to sign 3 new defenders, 2 central midfielders and at least one, possibly two strikers.

I think we'll do well to finish top 4 with what we've got at the moment.

We are not going to mount a challenge for the league imo ,sorry folks

This.

We need to learn to walk before we can run and that means cementing third place as ours. When people talk about the best of the rest that should mean the team finishing fourth, because we're always in the top three along with the OF.

Once we get closer to that we can think about pushing the OF.

Kind of pointless thread if you dont name names.

Personally I'd keep them all at this stage and maybe add. We've got a good squad by SPL standards with Taouil and Kyle (hopefully) still to come back. Spurs simply showed what a gulf in class there is between the SPL and EPL.

There is 0% chance of Hearts challenging for the SPL title this season. How anyone can think otherwise is completely bewildering. Romanov had his chance to take on the Old Firm when he threw some money at it, he blew it spectacularly.

None except Kello.

1.5m sales of Wallace to Hun should be benchmark.

Do we have any player who can command transfer 1m+ transfer fee now?

I can't think of anyone but him.

My hope of challenging OF/progress in Europe this season ended a day before the season actually began.

But for the usual "the best of the rest", we have a squad good enough to secure.

As others have said I reckon Kello would be the only one still here if we were building a championship winning side.

Skacel has the quality but is unlikely to ever last 90 mins again imo.

Novi has the potential but who knows how that will turn out. Plus he's a LITH (angry face)

Im not usually one for the FacePalm but

Get a grip man. We got absoutely humped by a top English Premiership side with shitloads of money and better players by miles and miles. The squad that we put out to face them is the best we have, and its a squad of players that can beat most SPL teams on our day. Thats our concern, the SPL. If we seriously want to put in a title challange we need players on silly wages which we cannot and should not be paying. Last time we put in a challange our debts went up nearly a third.

Title winning sides often win midfield battles in league games.

Black and Mrowiec couldn't win a timeshare scratchcard on holiday.
